The Michael Balint Scholarship for Medical Students

The Michael Balint Scholarship for Medical Students interested in Psychoanalytic Work was established in 2023 by the Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC) of the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA). It is named after Dr. Michael Balint (Hungarian: Bálint Mihály), a brilliant psychoanalyst who, amongst other things, was influential in setting up groups (now known as “Balint groups”) for physicians to discuss psychodynamics factors in relation to patients, and who introduced the concept of “patient-centeredness” into contemporary medicine.

The goal of this scholarship is to encourage psychodynamic and psychoanalytic thinking amongst medical students, which aligns with the mission and goals of the MSEC.

The scholarship includes:

  1. A $500 award, to be used for travel expenses to APsA’s National Meeting, usually held every February in New York City. Details about the upcoming conference may be found here.
  2. Complimentary registration to APsA’s two main conferences (The National Meeting usually held in February, and the Annual Meeting usually held in June and often virtual).

Sponsor

The Medical Student Education Committee (MSEC) of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

Criteria

  1. The applicant is required to be actively enrolled in an accredited medical school at the time of the application.
  2. The applicant may be self-nominated or may be nominated by someone else.
  3. The applicant is expected to attend the MSEC Seminar (Committee Sponsored Workshop on Medical Student Education) during APsA’s National Meeting.

  • Michael Balint Scholarship Application Form (click here to download)
