Research and Education Section
The DPE Research Education Section (RES) encompasses psychoanalytic research broadly conceived and strives to underline its value in the clinical situation. We do not limit research studies to experimental designs but also include systematic case studies, particularly those that integrate research findings, epidemiological studies, and qualitative as well as quantitative methods. Because we are aware that findings, particularly group findings, cannot be applied indiscriminately to clinical work with individual patients, we value research studies that report individual differences and interaction effects as these studies may be more directly relevant to clinical work. Access to and awareness of research findings can contribute to our general background knowledge and to the development of open-minded critical perspectives.

We encourage critical thinking by grounding psychoanalytic training and education in a framework that integrates psychoanalytic perspectives and knowledge with relevant findings from other disciplines. We provide support and resources to interested faculty and students who wish to include research studies in courses where this material is relevant. We develop programs with outstanding speakers to stimulate interest, discussion, and debate on issues relevant to the role of research in psychoanalytic education for APsA member institutes and centers along with the psychoanalytic community at large.

Section Description
The DPE Research Education Section (RES) encompasses psychoanalytic research broadly
conceived and strives to underline its value in the clinical situation. We do not limit research
studies to experimental designs but also include systematic case studies, particularly those that
integrate research findings, epidemiological studies, and qualitative as well as quantitative
methods. Because we are aware that findings, particularly group findings, cannot be applied
indiscriminately to clinical work with individual patients, we value research studies that report
individual differences and interaction effects as these studies may be more directly relevant to
clinical work. Access to and awareness of research findings can contribute to our general
background knowledge and to the development of open-minded critical perspectives.
Mission
The aims of the RES include facilitating critical thinking to further ground psychoanalytic training and education in a framework that integrates psychoanalytic perspectives and knowledge with relevant findings from other disciplines. We hope to encourage interested faculty to include research studies in courses where this material is relevant. We hope to create programs that stimulate interest, discussion, and debate on issues relevant to the role of research in psychoanalytic training and education for local institutes and for the psychoanalytic community at large.
Vision
The RES has aimed to encompass research broadly conceived. We do not limit ‘research studies ‘ to experimental designs, but also include systematic case studies, particularly those that integrate research findings, epidemiological studies, and qualitative as well as quantitative methods. Because we are aware that findings, particularly group findings, cannot be applied indiscriminately to clinical work with individual patients, we value research studies that report individual differences and interaction effects as these studies may be more directly relevant to clinical work. Access to and awareness of research findings can contribute to one’s general background knowledge and to an open-minded critical perspective.
Description of Resources
We encourage critical thinking by grounding psychoanalytic training and education in a
framework that integrates psychoanalytic perspectives and knowledge with relevant findings
from other disciplines. We provide support and resources to interested faculty and students
who wish to include research studies in courses where this material is relevant. We develop
programs with outstanding speakers to stimulate interest, discussion, and debate on issues
relevant to the role of research in psychoanalytic education for APsaA member institutes and
centers along with the psychoanalytic community at large.
