Dr. Nicolle Zapien Named 2027 Ticho Memorial Award Recipient
New York, NY, August 6, 2026 — The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) is pleased to announce that Nicolle Zapien has been selected as the 2027 recipient of the Ernst & Gertrude Ticho Memorial Award. Dr. Zapien will deliver the Ticho Award Lecture in February 2027, during the APsA National Meeting at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington D.C.
Established to honor the scholarly and clinical legacies of Ernst and Gertrude Ticho, the Memorial Award recognizes an early career psychoanalyst whose work advances the integration of theory, practice, and teaching and extends psychoanalytic thinking into contemporary clinical concerns. “Dr. Zapien embodies what the Ticho Award was created to recognize: an emerging leader whose scholarship, clinical thinking, and engagement with the future of psychoanalysis reflect exceptional promise. Her forthcoming lecture promises to bring a fresh psychoanalytic perspective to questions of technology, omnipotence, and human limitation in the digital age. The committee was especially struck by her ability to bring psychoanalytic ideas into dialogue with the profound technological changes shaping contemporary life, and we look forward to the contribution her Ticho Lecture will make to our field.”
Dr. Nicolle Zapien is a member psychoanalyst and the president-elect of The Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC). She is the host of “Technology and the Mind,” a podcast dedicated to interviewing psychoanalysts and others about how technology impacts our minds and society. Dr. Zapien recently won the Marty Nass paper prize for creativity and psychoanalysis for her graduation paper on “Tango in the Waiting Room: Movement and Gesture as Anticipatory and Responsive Parts of Analytic Process.” She has authored two books as well as several articles. She teaches, consults and conducts treatments for adults and couples in Oakland, CA.
