IRRC: Proposed Revision to Standards for Psychoanalytic Education

The APsaA Institute Requirements & Review Committee (IRRC) is tasked with presenting for your review any proposed changes to the current Standards for Psychoanalytic Education.

Per the bylaws, the IRRC proposes policies and procedures and these are circulated to the members for comment over a period of at least 30 days.  At its next meeting following the 30-day comment period, the Board of Directors shall take action on the comments from members of the Association. Such policies and procedures shall then be approved by 60% of the Directors present and voting at a meeting of the Board of Directors.

The 30-day comment period ended November 8, 2021:

The Board has accepted the recommendation of the Institute Requirements and Review Committee (IRRC) on a revision of the Educational Standards, as amended. Following a 30-day member comment period the Board will vote on the Revised Standards at its next meeting on December 12, 2021. For approval a 60% majority is required.
We hope you have been able to participate in or follow the comprehensive and inclusive process of study, consultation, and discussion that has taken place across the association during the preparation of the recommendation.
These revised standards build on the substantial agreement that exists within APsaA on the principles and foundations of psychoanalytic education and respect the differences in their implementation at Approved Institutes.
You are invited to submit comments that will be considered by the IRRC and the Board. As we have done throughout the process, we welcome feedback however it is delivered, directly to the IRRC or Board, on the Member’s List, at local discussions, etc.
We think these Standards reflect the excellence, flexibility, and aspirations of psychoanalytic education in APsaA. They constitute a “living document” that will require periodic revision. Hopefully these Standards will be adopted so that we can turn our united energies to both meet the existential challenges and seize the multiple opportunities of today.
Respectfully,
Bill Glover, IRRC Chair
Bonnie Buchele, IRRC Secretary
