In-Training Member Information

Welcome Psychoanalysts-In-Training, Psychotherapists-In-Training, Academics-In-Training and Researchers-In-Training!

APsA and IPA candidates and trainees can join APsA to identify with, support and advance psychoanalytic treatments and therapies, education and scientific inquiry. APsA provides members with direct benefits to meet the needs of psychoanalytic candidates, psychotherapy trainees, academics, scholars and researchers.

  • The APsA Membership Year begins on January 1 through December 31. Annual Member Dues are due by January 31st.  Renewal invoices are emailed in early November as well as become available in the member portal. For additional information, please visit: apsa.org/membership-dues.
  • New members who join between July and December will be processed for the following calendar year of membership and receive bonus months added on, and new JAPA subscriptions will also begin the following calendar year.

Psychoanalyst-In-Training Clinical Member


  • APsA Analytic Candidates (first-time members only – to rejoin/reinstate see below):

    Psychoanalysts-In-Training (candidates) accepted for full clinical psychoanalytic training in an APsA approved institute or new training facility are eligible for Clinical Membership.  New APsA candidates seeking to join will receive an application once notification of enrollment is received from the institute or they can join below.

    • This application is for first-time members only (former members must contact membership services to rejoin/reinstate their membership – see former members below)

  • IPA Candidates (not affiliated with an APsA Institute):

    Psychoanalysts-In-Training (candidates) in clinical psychoanalytic training at a Direct Component Society (not affiliated with APsA) of the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA) are eligible to join. This application is for first-time members only (former members must contact membership services to rejoin – see former members below).

Candidates enrolled in an academic (non-clinical) training program at an APsA approved institute are eligible to join the Academic-In-Training Member category of membership.


Note: Membership in the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA), which is a separate organization from APsA, is limited to those who have completed formal clinical psychoanalytic training that meets the IPA’s training standards. 

Psychotherapist-In-Training Clinical Member


  • APsA Psychotherapy Trainees (first-time members):

Psychotherapists-In-Training (trainees) in a clinical psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy program at an APsA approved training facility, or those who demonstrate enrollment in an equivalent clinical psychoanalytic psychotherapy training program are eligible for Clinical Membership.

Plan to Attend the APsA Meeting?

Join First & Then Register

New In-Training membership applications cannot be processed the day of any APsA meeting (virtual or in-person).

Applications must be completed online and processed by the National Office at least 1-2 business days (M-F) in advance of the meeting registration deadline to register at the discounted fee. Please note that some applications require a longer processing time.
