STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
Generational Transition and the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Program at BPSI: A Look at Contemporary Child Analytic Work and How a Program Reinvigorated Child Training in Boston
APsA Symposium Series: Online
Moderated by Dov Fogel, M.D.
Sunday, April 12, 2026
12:00–2:00 PM ET
Event Registration – REGISTRATION IS CLOSED
Child analysis has deep roots in Boston, traceable at least to Beata Rank’s arrival from Vienna in 1936. Yet child analysis training programs, including the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, have struggled in recent decades as analysts have withdrawn from academic and public spheres, alternative therapeutic approaches have gained prominence, and children’s lives have grown increasingly busy. Nevertheless, BPSI has made significant strides over the past decade in revitalizing its child program.
The first three speakers, Frances Arnold, Ph.D., Neal S. Kass, M.D. and Lisa F. Price, M.D., will discuss analytic work with patients presenting various forms of trauma: one case involves a school-aged child with severe aggression, while the other two concern teenagers who proved extremely difficult to engage. All three analysts will describe the extensive efforts required to connect with their patients and help them ultimately become more vital. The final speaker, Samuel C. Roth, Ph.D., will describe how BPSI leadership worked to facilitate a generational transition and restore vitality to the child program itself. CME/CE 2

Continuing Education Statement of Objectives
STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES
This symposium highlights the rich history and contemporary renewal of child psychoanalysis in Boston and features in-depth clinical case presentations addressing dissociation, aggression, play, trauma, and gender identity in children and adolescents. Open to therapists of all disciplines and experience levels, the program examines complex cases involving behavioral dysregulation, gender dysphoria, eating disorders, and depression, with a focus on the interpersonal dilemmas that emerge when trauma complicates the therapeutic relationship. Presenters will share innovative treatment approaches and practical strategies to expand participants’ clinical skills and deepen their capacity to engage and support vulnerable youth.
After attending this activity, attendees will be able to:
- Identify coping skills that can help school age children who have significant issues with aggression.
- Identify two ways dissociative symptoms present in a teenager and how to teach skills to the teens to help reduce their symptoms.
