Presentation Summary:
As AI systems take up residence in the consulting room, classroom, bedroom, nursery, hospital and battlefield, humanity faces an unprecedented challenge: how do we respond to this new other that is both native inhabitant and intruder? Born of human desires and fears, fantasized about for centuries, AI is a longstanding transference figure, while current generative AI models are unmistakable aliens among us. In this seminar Dr. Amy Levy will unpack the human desire for AI, how that desire is interfacing with the all too real AI systems upending our way of life, the implications for the field and practice of psychoanalysis, and she will offer some useful guidance on how we in psychoanalysis might respond. There will be ample time for discussion, including opportunities to unpack the ideas presented as well as clinical material from audience members.
Amy Levy, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. She chairs the American Psychoanalytic Association’s (APsA) Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CAI), serves on the subcommittee “Artificial Intelligence” for the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) committee, “Psychoanalysis and Technology,” serves on the editorial board of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly, and she is Editor of the Substack series, “AI in My Mind,” for The Psychoanalytic Quarterly. She is author of the book, The New Other: Alien Intelligence and the Innovation Drive. Dr. Levy lectures internationally on the intersection of psychoanalysis and artificial intelligence and maintains a private practice in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
