In this masterclass for licensed therapists, participants will actively review in fine detail a subtitled clinical video with in-depth discussion with Jon Frederickson and Thomas Brod. The video is edited from a single multi-hour consultation in which Jon Frederickson interviews an extraordinarily resistant patient. The case, called “The Man Who Thought Therapy Was Bullshit,” demonstrates advanced technique for managing high resistance and omnipotent defenses against characterological depression. Frederickson incorporates clinical insights of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) into his own psychodynamic technique. This course is built out of detailed discussion with audience-participants of the moment-to-moment choice points by the clinician. This course is limited to licensed professionals.

Jon Frederickson, MSW is an internationally prominent psychotherapist, author, and master instructor specializing in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). He is best known for his award-winning books on dynamic therapy techniques, his international teaching, and his focus on deliberate practice in psychotherapy. He conducts extensive core training and supervision programs globally, with teaching engagements spanning the U.S., Norway, Italy, Switzerland, Poland, Australia, and India. Thomas Brod, MD is senior faculty New Center for Psychoanalysis and former Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine.

He coordinates the NCP Film & Mind series and the NCP Manifest Mind series. A psychoanalyst in private practice, his background includes study of ISTDP with Robert Neborsky and Habid Davanloo. His most recent publication is on psychoanalytic philosophy of the psychedelic mind, “I AM…gone”: Persistence of Subjectivity in Psychedelic States.
