The Wendy Jacobson Candidates’ Council Teaching Award specifically recognizes the teaching of candidates and is distinct from the Edith Sabshin Teaching Award for excellence in psychoanalytic teaching of non-candidates.

In 2024, the Candidates’ Council voted to name the award in honor of Wendy Jacobson, M.D. to thank her for her contributions to psychoanalytic education. To promote excellence in teaching, Dr. Jacobson in turn generously endowed both this  and the Edith Sabshin Teaching Award. Because of her endowment, two winners will be selected for this award annually and awarded $2,500 each along with the honor of presenting at the National Meeting.

Nomination Guidelines

Candidates are invited to nominate a member of your Institute or Center for the 2027 APsA Wendy Jacobson Candidates’ Council Teaching Award. This Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions as educators of psychoanalytic candidates.

The objectives of this award are to 1) encourage excellence, engagement, and innovation in classroom teaching at institutes and centers; 2) acknowledge and reward gifted teachers; and 3) disseminate innovative curriculum development and effective approaches to teaching amongst psychoanalytic institutes and centers.

Nominees for this award may be newer or less experienced teachers in addition to more senior ones, and must be members of APsA.

The award will be granted annually to two recipients from different institutes/centers. Recipients will receive commemoration and a cash award recognizing this achievement, and present a collaborative session demonstrating teaching excellence at the APsA National Meeting

To make a nomination, please submit:

1. A letter of nomination (maximum of 2 pages) from the Candidate body at your Institute or Center that describes the individual’s fulfillment of the following requirements:
   1. A description of their teaching style that embodies the essence of
      educational excellence;
   2. The letter should specifically address: Teaching Effectiveness; Innovative Teaching Methods; Learner Engagement; Feedback and Assessment; Applicability to Practice and Sociocultural Surround.
   3. Names of courses/programs and dates of teaching psychoanalytic
      candidates.
2.   Supporting Materials (optional): Class Outline, Syllabi, Class Transcript, etc.
   (maximum of 10 pages)
3. The institute/center submission should be addressed to Amanda Exman, Psy.D., LP, Chair, Wendy Jacobson Candidates’ Council Teaching Award, and emailed to Tina Faison [email protected] at the APsA National Office.

Additional Guidelines:
Nominations should originate with candidates. Faculty and administrators are
encouraged to promote this award with candidates, but the candidates must be the ones putting forth the nomination.

The selection process will be blinded for the selection committee. Please submit a cover sheet that includes the nominee’s name and contact information, candidate nominator name(s) and contact information, institute/center name. Nominators should blind the rest of the application as to nominee’s name, candidate nominator name(s), institute/center name and location, age, gender and race. Please use phrases such as “this instructor” or “this teacher” rather than “he” or “she.”

Nomination packets should be submitted to your institute/center administrator for
review to ensure information is blinded and complete. If an administrator receives more than one packet, the material should be returned to the candidates nominating the individuals and they can decide which nominee to put forward
for the current year. Only one packet per institute/center will be accepted.
