2025 Research Training Program Participants Share Their Experience

A look at how RTP shaped research, mentorship, and professional growth

The Research Training Program (RTP) is designed to strengthen the next generation of psychoanalytic researchers through focused mentorship, collaborative inquiry, and practical support for developing meaningful projects. Participants from the 2025 cohort describe a program that is both rigorous and welcoming, offering individualized guidance, rich discussion, and a community that continues to shape their work long after the sessions end. Their testimonies below reflect how the RTP helped deepen their skills, clarify their research goals, and expand their engagement with psychoanalytic scholarship.

I learned an incredible amount from this research symposium. Thinking and discussing research ideas together with colleagues, as well as receiving individual supervision, were invaluable. I experienced the personal attention and mutual engagement as warm and motivating, and they led me to set up a research project alongside my clinical work as a psychoanalyst.

– Marc Hamburger

The RTP offered feedback and ideas on my project, in a collegia, stimulating environment. faculty and other presenters were generous in sharing their input. I particularly enjoyed the faculty’s stance as clinician and researcher, which made the feedback I received relevant from an empirical research point of view, without sacrificing the clinical relevance of my research to people that work in the field.

– Alberto Manzi

I had a great experience with the training program last year. I would recommend this highly to anyone looking for truely helpful feedback on their research. The feedback we received has and continues to alter our approach.

– Spencer Gardner

Participating in RTP was a fantastic experience. The mentorship I received was outstanding—thoughtful, generous, and genuinely invested in my growth as a researcher. What stands out most is the ongoing relationship with my mentor, whose guidance I continued to seek beyond the program. Their mentorship encouraged me to think more ambitiously about my work. Equally meaningful was the sense of community that formed among those of us participating. Collaborating with other psychodynamic researchers was truly a highlight of the program.

Participating in the Research Training Program (RTP) by the American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA) was truly a transformative experience that I cannot recommend highly enough. As a member of the inaugural cohort 2025 in San Francisco,I had the incredible opportunity to be mentored by the esteemed Prof. Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber. Her guidance and expertise were invaluable in shaping my research on teleanalysis, allowing me to delve into contemporary issues that are increasingly relevant in our digital age.
The program itself is meticulously designed to deepen understanding and enhance practical research skills in psychoanalysis. From the very beginning, I was impressed by the rigorous training and exceptional support provided. The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to foster a collaborative environment, encouraging innovation and critical thinking among participants. This supportive atmosphere not only enhanced my own research but also inspired me to explore new avenues within the field.
One of the standout aspects of the program is the community it creates. I had the pleasure of connecting with other passionate researchers, each bringing unique perspectives and ideas to the table. The opportunity to exchange thoughts, engage in enriching discussions, and build a strong professional network was a highlight of my experience. These connections have proven to be essential as I continue to navigate my research journey.
The insights and knowledge I gained through this program have profoundly influenced my work and reinforced my commitment to advancing the field of psychoanalysis. I wholeheartedly encourage anyone interested in enhancing their research skills and making meaningful contributions to the discipline to consider applying. This program is not just an educational opportunity; it is a chance to be part of a vibrant community dedicated to exploring the frontiers of psychoanalytic thought.
