The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) congratulates Illinois in becoming the 5th jurisdiction to ban conversion therapy for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth – joining California, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington D.C. Minors in the state of Illinois will now be protected from the long-discredited practice of conversion or “reparative” therapy.
According to the recently released National Vietnam Veterans Longitudinal Study (NVVLS), there are both encouraging and alarming findings regarding the long-term mental health of combat veterans.

The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) applauds today’s landmark ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court (Obergefell v. Hodges), recognizing the constitutionality of same-sex and same-gender civil marriage, finally extending all the rights and benefits of marriage to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples in all 50 states.

We, the undersigned professional mental health, medical and academic organizations, strongly support the Illinois Conversion Therapy Prohibition Act - Senate Bill 111 and House Bill 217. The Act protects the health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth from harmful and ineffective sexual orientation change efforts, which are also referred to as conversion therapy.

February 12, 2015 – New York, NY – The American Medical Association’s (AMA) official Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Evaluation and Management (E/M) Services Guidelines have been updated to include a call for healthcare professionals to inquire about a patient’s current or past military history. The CPT code set constitutes the most widely accepted medical nomenclature used to report medical procedures and services under public and private health insurance programs.
The stories are becoming tragically familiar: statistics for military and veteran suicides rival combat as a cause of death among those who have served. Return to civilian life can be problematic for many veterans and their loved ones – at best, it is a significant readjustment stress for everyone involved. The civilian population continues in its denial of the stark fact it has been supporting and funding one of the longest wars in U.S. history.
