PANEL II: FREE SPEECH, HATE SPEECH AND NEUTRALITY: IN AND OUT OF THE CONSULTING ROOM

Chair: Donald Moss, M.D.
Presenters: Aisha Abbasi, M.D., Seth Aronson, Psy.D., Mayumi Pierce, M.D., Lara Sheehi, Psy.D. and Susan Vaughan, M.D.

Dr. Donald Moss proposed this panel and writes – “Hate Speech” clearly identifies its targets.  Its implicit argument is always the same– that the world would be better were those targets removed or obliterated.  Freud caught the spirit of this speech well:  “the ego hates, abhors and wishes to destroy” its sources of unpleasure.  Though quick to theorize sexuality as a crucial constituent of human identity, psychoanalysis has been slower to recognize the determining power of hatred and of “hate speech”.  The presenters in this panel have each been the target of hate speech.  As psychoanalysts committed to “free association”, they are all aware of the dangers lurking in limitlessly licensing the spoken word.  We hope attendees will become better versed in the profound vicissitudes of hatred, better able to think and respond, both within and without the clinical situation.
