SUMMARY:The Emerging Self of the Young Child - Maya Klein\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:The field of psychoanalysis is replete with theories about infancy and child development\, and within psychoanalysis there is a longstanding tradition of linking child development to the organization of intrapsychic structure. This six-week hybrid seminar led by psychoanalyst\, Maya Klein\, Ph.D. returns to the foundational texts of psychoanalytic developmental theory\, tracing the arc from Freud’s original drive-based account of childhood through the contributions of ego psychology\, object relations theory\, and beyond. Participants will explore how the classical tradition illuminates the therapeutic relationship and informs clinical technique.

SUMMARY:Countertransference: The Total Situation in Child Analysis
DESCRIPTION:Using vivid clinical material\, broad theoretical references\, and decades of experience as an analyst\, Dr. Sugarman will explore the total situation in child analysis — and why it tends to elicit particularly intense countertransference responses and enactments. He defines transference and countertransference as the interpersonalization of mental structures\, examining them not only in response to child patients and their caregivers\, but also teachers\, drivers\, and other seemingly peripheral figures. His approach is nuanced\, clear\, and clinically grounded.

SUMMARY:When the Risk of Targeted Violence Enters the Psychotherapy Relationship
DESCRIPTION:Despite the steady decrease in violent crime over the past three decades\, there has been an increase in targeted attacks toward people in public places\, ranging from schools and workplaces to open recreational areas. Motivations vary\, but often include both personal grievances and an attraction to extreme religious or political beliefs. Mental health professionals\, on rare occasion\, may find the antecedents of such thoughts\, emotions\, and behaviors in their patients. In this seminar\, Dr. Meloy will teach such pre-offense warning behaviors to clinicians in attendance. Based upon his research group’s work over the past 15 years\, and validated by numerous studies by others in North America\, Europe\, and Australia\, these proximal warning behaviors provide important benchmarks for the clinician to identify\, assess\, and manage such threats posed by their patients in their daily practice.

SUMMARY:Calvin Colarusso\, MD - The Nuclear Family\, a Living Organism
DESCRIPTION:This presentation is based on a paper by Calvin Colarusso\, MD\, which reflects his longstanding interest in the observation of children and adults within the context of the nuclear family. In this work\, Dr. Colarusso conceptualizes the family as a living organism that progresses through five stages of development\, from formation to eventual decline\, offering a framework for understanding the evolution of family structure and relationships over time. \nBringing together theory and clinical material\, this presentation offers a rich perspective on the developmental life cycle of the family and the therapeutic processes that support the creation of a thriving and viable organic nuclear family life.

SUMMARY:The Moral Defense: Nietzsche in the Clinic (Hybrid)
DESCRIPTION:Given that we can detect in the canonical work of many psychoanalytic thinkers the philosophical influences of Kant\, Schopenhauer\, Hegel\, and Heidegger this presentation explores this point of connection between philosophy and psychoanalysis. Few thinkers have matched Friedrich Nietzsche’s psychological insights—a fact Freud acknowledged when he admitted to avoiding Nietzsche’s work to preserve the originality of his own ideas—yet the value of these insights for our clinical practice remains to be explored. \nIn this presentation\, Philosophers and Psychoanalysts\, Allison Merrick\, PhD\, PsyD\, RP\, FIPA and Dr. Rochelle Godbout\, PhD\, RP\, will focus on one of Nietzsche’s most clinically resonant insights: that morality is frequently employed as a psychological defense\, shielding individuals from intolerable emotions such as shame and helplessness. Through detailed clinical examples and a conversation with Rochelle Godbout\, Merrick will demonstrate how to identify moral defenses in therapeutic work and offer strategies for helping patients access the defended-against affects beneath them.

SUMMARY:Joan Peters\, Ph.D. - The Missing Voice: What Lay Patients Can Tell Analysts About Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:What if the most important perspective in psychoanalysis is the one we rarely hear? Lay patients—those without theoretical training or professional community—constitute the majority of analysands\, yet their authentic voice remains largely absent from our field’s discourse. \nUnlike analyst-patients who can contextualize their experience through theory and peer discussion\, lay patients navigate analysis without a map. They offer raw\, unfiltered insights into what truly matters in the therapeutic encounter—insights that could transform how we understand the analytic process. \nDrawing from her book Untangling: A Memoir of Psychoanalysis\, Joan K. Peters will reveal how the lay patient’s unique vantage point challenges our assumptions and illuminates the mysterious bond between analysand and analyst in ways theory alone cannot capture.

SUMMARY:Daniel Goldin\, MFT\, PsyD - Toward a New Interpretation of Dreams
DESCRIPTION:Humans have long looked to dreams for meaning\, seeing in them symbolic messages\, divine signs\, or glimpses of the future. Dr. Daniel Goldin suggests that dreams reconnect us with a pre-verbal mode of communication—what Tomasello calls a “natural language” of imaginative storytelling. In this immersive\, symbolic space\, our minds craft metaphorical narratives that mirror the deeper structures of our thoughts\, much like our ancestors once did to make sense of their world. Dreams\, he argues\, help us reshape the hidden storylines behind our modern struggles\, offering insight and transformation through symbolic drama. \n  \nCE.

SUMMARY:Peter Shabad\, PhD - Integrating Trauma and Shame with Projected Images of Death
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Peter Shabad will briefly describe how the origins of chronic shame emerge from chronic experiences of rejected vulnerability at the hands of one’s parents. These cumulative experiences of trauma may be viewed as the psychic loss of a physically present parent\, in which one’s expectant hope for a wished-for parent is continually frustrated by the actuality of the real parent. The chronic experiences of hope and disappointments are demoralizing sources of shame and often covered over in the necessity of developing the hard defensive armor of becoming an adult.

SUMMARY:The Unconscious Triad: Hidden Unconscious\, Buried Unconscious\, Implicit Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:Description: The current extension of the concept of the unconscious to different levels\, configurations\, and functioning of the mind is the result of decades of collective reflection on the clinic and on theory. Analysts today have a broader\, more refined and complex knowledge of defensive and transformative processes\, and this has also led to an evolution in technique. The paper presents a combination of psychoanalytic theory and technique through two clinical cases that present complex articulations of spurious unconscious functional areas and modalities\, alternately repressed and not repressed. \nEducational Objective(s)\n1) To provide the audience with an update on the current extension of the concept of the unconscious\, with regard to different levels\, configurations and functioning of the mind.\n2) To present clinical examples of these new conceptual extensions\, to transfer this update to daily therapeutic practice.\nPresenter Information \nBio: Stefano Bolognini\, M.D. is a psychiatrist and training analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society\, of which he was Scientific Secretary and President. After serving as a Representative on the first IPA Board\, he became its President in 2013 and served in that role until 2017. He also founded the “IPA Encyclopedic Dictionary of Psychoanalysis” and is a member of the Advisory Board of the International Psychoanalytic University Berlin (IPU)\, Honorary Member of the New York Contemporary Freudian Society (NYCFS)\, and of the Los Angeles Institute and Society for Psychoanalytic Studies (LAISPS). Bolognini was a member of the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis for 10 years\, and has published over 250 psychoanalytic works\, both books and papers.

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Understanding the Clinical Process from Multiple Perspectives
DESCRIPTION:Description: Three esteemed psychoanalysts will discuss a case presented by a fourth-year candidate\, each from their distinctive theoretical orientation. This stimulating panel presentation will provide a glimpse into the spectrum of psychoanalytic approaches and their convergences and divergences. Following the presentations\, a moderated discussion will encourage the exchange of ideas and perspectives. \nBio: Charles M. Cutler\, Ph.D.\, has a clinical psychology practice that involves working with adults\, seniors\, and adolescents. Based in La Jolla\, California\, he works with individuals\, couples and families who present with a wide variety of clinical problems. Problems may be acute or chronic\, and Dr. Cutler will tailor the treatment to each situation. Dr. Cutler is a psychologist and psychoanalyst with advanced training. He is a faculty member of the San Diego Psychoanalytic Center where he teaches and supervises psychiatrists\, psychologists\, and social workers. \nAlan Sugarman\, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist\, practicing in Solana Beach. He provides psychotherapy and psychoanalysis to children\, adolescents\, and adults\, and works with parents on parenting issues. He is also a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California\, San Diego. Before coming to San Diego Dr. Sugarman was a postdoctoral fellow at the Menninger Foundation and a faculty member of the Yale University Department of Psychiatry where he was the Chief Psychologist at the Yale Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Sugarman has almost 90 professional publications and is a frequently invited speaker and teacher at local\, national\, and international psychoanalytic institutes\, organizations\, and conferences. \nRichard Tuch\, M.D. believes strongly in the value of talking treatments and the thrust of his practice is seeing patients in individual psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. Dr. Tuch believes in fashioning treatments that are custom tailored to the unique needs of each individual he sees. He maintains an active interest in\, and has published papers that explore the factors that make psychotherapy effective. Dr. Tuch capitalizes on his classical training in psychoanalysis by fashioning modern treatments that address the underlying factors that keep individuals from maximizing their potential. Dr. Tuch’s approach to treatment takes into consideration current thinking about such topics as attachment theory\, mentalization\, and the “relational approach” to treatment. He sees value in helping people understand why they do the things they do: why they repeat self-defeating behaviors\, how they keep themselves from achieving what they’d like to achieve\, and what keeps them from becoming the person they’d like to become.

SUMMARY:Mark Solms - A Neuroscientific Perspective on Freudian Dream Theory
DESCRIPTION:Mark Solms is a psychoanalyst\, neuropsychologist and a professor in Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town (South Africa). His lecture begins with a discussion on the series of discoveries about the dreaming brain between the 1950s and 1980s that suggested that Freudian theory was scientifically disproven. Less well known is the fact that a series of discoveries from the 1990s onwards have steadily rolled back the claims made against Freudian theory. The implications for the neuroscientific standing of psychoanalysis are considerable. These two sets of discoveries and their implications will be described in this lecture. \nCE credit.

SUMMARY:Nancy McWilliams - Clinical Supervision: Old Controversies and New Dilemmas
DESCRIPTION:Nancy McWilliams Clinical Supervision: Old Controversies and New Dilemmas. \nEvent Description: National organizations of psychiatrists\, psychologists\, social workers\, and counselors have recently advocated specific courses in supervision for trainees their respective clinical disciplines. They have tended to frame supervision in terms of specific competencies or progressive skill sets\, often measured via symptom reduction in the supervisee’s clients. They have also emphasized the importance of adapting supervision\, like treatment\, to areas of diversity. But there has been less attention to general developmental goals such as the supervisee’s overall professional and personal growth\, and to areas of maturation that constitute progress in both therapist and patient. This workshop will contextualize clinical supervision historically\, in light of empirical\, clinical\, and theoretical literature on the topic. It aims to be relevant to the practical and professional needs of both supervisors and supervisees. \nCE Credits.

SUMMARY:Reflections on Practicing During the Pandemic: What Can Be Learned? What Now?
DESCRIPTION:Description: Even for those of us with prior tele-analytic experience\, our sudden immersion in practicing tele-analytically during the pandemic caused a seismic shift in our ordinary way of practicing with all the psychic reverberations such a change evokes.\nNow that the dust has settled some\, we have an opportunity to reflect on what we’ve observed about the essential conditions for effective psychoanalytic work\, the role of the external setting and physical presence\, the role of the analyst’s internal setting\, and what’s necessary for establishing and maintaining a useful analytic relationship. \nBio: Dr. Lena Theodorou Ehrlich is a Training and Supervising Analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and Visiting Faculty at the Denver Institute for Psychoanalysis and the Florida Psychoanalytic Center. Her writing and teaching focus on various aspects of clinical theory and practice\, including obstacles to beginning\, deepening\, and ending an analysis\, sustaining an analytic identity and practice\, assessing analytic ability and supervisory countertransferences\, and technical and conceptual considerations of tele-treatment. Her paper “Tele-Analysis: Slippery Slope or Rich Opportunity?” won the 2019 Prize Award from the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association for excellence in psychoanalytic scholarship and distinguished contributions to the journal. In 2020\, Dr. Ehrlich published a book entitled Psychoanalysis from the Inside Out: Developing and Sustaining an Analytic Identity and Practice. Recently\, she has been honored with the 2024 Candidates’ Council Master Teacher Award. Lena is a Greek immigrant\, a wife\, mother\, and a grandmother of delightful three-year old twin girls.
