SUMMARY:A Rapaport-Klein Study Group Presentation: Did Strachey Falsely Scientize Freud? with Professor Mark Solms
DESCRIPTION:The claim that Strachey ‘falsely scientized’ Freud\, mainly through the translation of his technical vocabulary\, is the red thread that runs through all the major criticisms of the Standard Edition (e.g. Bettelheim\, Ornston\, Laplanche). In this lecture\, Professor Mark Solms will argue against this criticism on three grounds. (1) It fails to take account of the differing conventions employed in German and English scientific writing. (2) It fails to take account of Freud’s personal involvement in Strachey’s choices. (3) It fails to consider continuities between Freud’s neuroscientific and psychoanalytic writings. These points will be illustrated by way of representative examples. Professor Mark Solms will also take the opportunity to describe and defend other editorial policy decisions that he took\, and he will provide a general introduction to the form and content of the Revised Standard Edition.

SUMMARY:20th Annual Austen Riggs College Counseling Conference: Peer Support\, Community\, and Belonging
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by the Erikson Institute for Education\, Research\, and Advocacy of the Austen Riggs Center \nPeer support serves a vital role in the mental health of college students. Beyond buttressing clinical services and expanding resources to meet unprecedented demand\, it can mobilize students’ strengths and foster experiences of community and belonging. However\, it also brings challenges\, including training\, liability\, and coordination with counseling and wellness centers. In this conference\, we will use presentations on an innovative peer assistance program and small and large group discussions to explore how participants might enhance peer support offerings on their campuses. \nFeaturing presentations by:\nSpencer Biel\, PsyD\, director of the Online Intensive Outpatient Program for college students and emerging adults in Massachusetts\nM. Dolores Cimini\, PhD\, New York State licensed psychologist and director of the Center for Behavioral Health Promotion and Applied Research at the University at Albany\, SUNY\nMegan Cusick Brix\, PhD\, assistant director for Peer Services and a licensed psychologist at University at Albany (UAlbany) Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). \nThis conference is for college mental health clinicians and those supporting students’ mental health otherwise. Trainees are encouraged to attend.
