SUMMARY:Comics on the Couch: Psychoanalysis and Graphic Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Vera J. Camden & Valentino L. Zullo \nPsychoanalysis has from its origins been imbricated in culture\, both high and low. Sigmund Freud defined and illustrated his pivotal discoveries through explications of folklore and fairy tales as well as the works of Sophocles\, Shakespeare and other venerable texts. What is less known\, however\, is that comics is also part of psychoanalytic history and development. \nIn this presentation\, we both uncover this history and frame a place for sequential art in the future of psychoanalysis following the words of French psychoanalyst Didier Anzieu\, who wrote that “psychoanalysis has a greater need of people who think in images than of scholars\, scholiasts\, abstract or formalistic thinkers.”

SUMMARY:The Power Of Connection: Shift in Technique
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jane S. Hall\, LCSW\, FIPA \nToo many of our current theories lead the clinician away from recognizing uniqueness and individuality. This program will explore how to connect to the client by recognizing their unique childhoods and the way they responded to key figures. My hope is to encourage the therapist to reevaluate certain ‘received wisdom\,’ in order to incorporate what recent research is providing\, and to think creatively based on new discoveries\, always with the unique individual in mind. \nBy leveling the playing field and connecting as partners to solve mysteries\, clinicians can engage the client in sharing the work of therapy. This is a skill that requires ‘benevolent curiosity\,’ which means that criticism is not part of the work. Our patients are critical of themselves which impedes the development we aim for.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Anne Alvarez\, PhD\, MACP  \nWe can sometimes be too preoccupied with removing defenses\, which is helpful with many patients but can drain the already limited resources of those with weak egos and a kind of apathetic despair. \nThis session will alert participants to the difference between resistance of a defensive nature and true deficit\, where certain social skills are really missing or reduced. Recognizing this distinction allows for the use of more appropriate therapeutic skills and strategies.

DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Therese Ragen\, PhD  \nThis lecture will present the journey of a descendant of one of the leaders of the 1919 Chicago race riot in which dozens of people were killed\, hundreds wounded and some thousand homes of Black people were burned down. The journey traced in the presentation is from the 1919 race riot to a racial enactment between a White psychologist/psychoanalyst and a Black patient in 2006 to the presenter’s involvement (since 2023) in racial reparations in the Chicago neighborhood in which the riot occurred. \nRegistration is required. Event will not be recorded.

SUMMARY:Gender Without Identity\, Development Without Developmentalism
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Avgi Saketopoulou\, PsyD. \nAt this moment in time\, conversations about gender are at the epicenter of heated debate and passionate conversation. At stake is gender’s status as a concept (does gender matter\, and if so\, how?) and matters relating to gender development. Is gender an innate part of the self or one that is distorted by exposure\, say\, to drag queens and the wrong internet sites? \nPsychoanalysis has unique insights to contribute to these questions and to the anxieties that underwrite them. In this presentation\, Dr. Saketopoulou helps us navigate them by focusing on the theory and clinical implications of two key psychoanalytic ideas: the fiction of a core gender identity that determines what one’s true and authentic gender is (be that cis\, trans\, or otherwise) and the idea of developmentally\, predetermined gender endpoints.
