SUMMARY:A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Human Sex Trafficking
DESCRIPTION:Sex trafficking is pertinent to psychoanalysis because of its historical roots and its persistence in current culture. It can be traced to ancient civilizations\, where adults and children were enslaved for labor and sex. Not until 1921 did the newly formed League of Nations make efforts to ‘suppress trafficking in women and children’. Since then\, major protocols\, policies and legislation have been enacted to prevent such exploitation and prostitution of others. However\, the extent of human trafficking has persisted. One might ask\, why hasn’t it been eradicated? Perhaps psychoanalysis may provide clues to the understanding of aspects such as dehumanization\, sexual abuse of children\, incest\, misogyny and patriarchy. DESCRIPTION:Led by Salman Akhtar\, MD. \nWhile retaining the ‘trio of guideposts’ (Pine\, 1997) constituted by anonymity\, abstinence\, and neutrality\, contemporary psychoanalysis has witnessed many changes in its theoretical base and clinical praxis. These include (1) a greater developmental orientation\, (ii) a tendency to judiciously accommodate the frame to the patient’s sociocultural ethos\, (iii) a greater appreciation of bilingualism as it affects associations and revelations and\, paradoxically\, of the multiple functions of silence\, (iv) refinement of the concepts and uses of both transference and countertransference\,(v) the deployment of development-facilitating interventions\, (vi) responsiveness to the religious and spiritual dimensions of the patient’s lives\, and (vii) inclusion of newer and unusual interventions like refusing to listen to certain kinds of material or invocation of imaginary interlocutors for the purposes of interpretation.

SUMMARY:Poetry and Psychoanalysis: Theory and Technique
DESCRIPTION:Led by Salman Akhtar\, MD. \nThis presentation will open by discussing what poetry is in actuality. What are its components? From where does it originate? How does it exert a healing effect upon mental pain? Moving on from such issues\, the presentation will highlight three links between poetry and psychoanalysis. These refer to the presence in the clinical hour of (i) poetic sentiment\, (ii) poetic speech\, and (iii) poetic specimen. Each will be elucidated in detail and with the help of socio-clinical vignettes. This presentation aims to demonstrate that\, through the affirmative holding and partial unmasking of the instinctual-epistemic conflation in verse and free association\, both poetry and psychoanalysis seek to transform the private into shared\, the hideous into elegant\, and the unfathomable into accessible.

SUMMARY:Psychoanalysis and Altruistic Living Kidney Donation: Toward a Psychodynamic Understanding of Donor Motivation
DESCRIPTION:Led by Prof. Dr. med. Lutz Goetzmann. Altruism itself is underexplored in psychoanalysis. The topic’s importance for learners is its investigation into a peculiar form of altruism. Living kidney donors are unusual\, extreme cases in which the acceptable costs to the benefactor far exceed an acceptable threshold for most people. There are many instances of helping a stranger in need\, but few would undergo major abdominal surgery with the attendant increased risk of kidney failure themselves. These extreme cases\, then\, reveal unique features that are otherwise absent\, highlight key factors less salient\, and offer new opportunities for hypothesis building in typical cases of altruism in psychoanalytic practice.

A clinical discussion will follow this. With regard to the first phallic-imaginary stage\, I will make references to Laplanche’s seduction theory\, particularly with regard to the attribution of gender identity. I will also introduce a preliminary traumatic stage and link this with two considerations: on the one hand\, the anti-Oedipal desiring-machines (Deleuze and Guattari) and\, on the other hand\, the idea of ??dédoublement (Danielle Quinodoz). SUMMARY:Surface Illusions: Reading the Manifest and Latent in Asian Painting
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Diane O’Donoghue. Guided tour at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Sigmund Freud’s widely read The Interpretation of Dreams (1900) made a number of bold claims about the meaning and mechanics of a phenomenon—dreaming— that was at that time widely dismissed in Eurocentric traditions. One of the best-known of his insights involved the notions of the manifest and latent\, with the imagery we recall from sleep (“manifest content”) as masking less accessible “latent meaning.” This latter aspect of psychical functioning often defied conventions of representation\, of “picturing\,” as Freud would have known it. This gallery presentation will consider Chinese and Japanese painting as offering ways to consider different notions of surface and depth\, as both visual and psychological experiences.

SUMMARY:The Analytic Museum: Freud's Curatorial Phantasm
DESCRIPTION:Led by Diane O’Donoghue. There is a considerable bibliography of writings about the vast collection of early objects\, most from Egypt and the classical Mediterranean\, filled Freud’s working spaces at Berggasse 19 in Vienna. He spoke frequently of the close relationship between his methods and those of the archaeologist; indeed\, the language of fieldwork appeared in a number of his writings. Although it is not difficult to imagine this first psychoanalytic site as akin to excavation\, there is a layer of meaning that existed for many of these fragments before their unearthing: they were taken from graves\, never intended to be disturbed. However\, for Freud’s metaphor to function\, the disruption of the burial and subversion of the intentions of those whose objects he collected must essentially be forgotten. This talk will consider the functioning of cultural amnesia that accompanied acts of collecting\, both in spaces devoted to the aesthetic and to the psychical.

SUMMARY:Working With Dreams: New Stops on the Royal Road
DESCRIPTION:Workshop presented by Deborah Luepnitz\, Ph.D. Freud believed that dream work is the “royal road” to the unconscious\, and he called The Interpretation of Dreams his “best and most important book.” While the “Relational turn” of the 1980s enhanced the field in several ways– reviving an interest in trauma\, redefining counter-transference\, and exploring the categories of race and gender\, some have asked if dream work was eclipsed in the process. Will this skill be lost to future generations? \nWe will begin by reviewing the classical method of dream interpretation\, which continues to structure the presenter’s work. However\, Freud had very little to say about color\, and nothing about race. With the use of clinical examples\, we will see how reflecting on color and race in the unconscious can help patients grapple with questions of identity\, self\, and other.

DESCRIPTION:A Scientific Meeting presented by Deborah Luepnitz\, Ph.D. A common misconception about treatments derived from psychoanalysis is that they are appropriate only for highly educated people of means. This presentation challenges that assumption by referring both to Freud’s free clinics and to Winnicott’s work with homeless children. We will proceed to a discussion of IFA (Insight For All)– a group in Philadelphia that connects analytically trained clinicians with individuals who are\, or have been\, street homeless. \nA relational framework leaning on Winnicott’s concepts will be used while making room for relevant insights from the French tradition. There will be one case history of the 10-year treatment of a man who had nearly ruined his health on the street\, and who made good use of the talking cure. Caring for marginalized people can have the positive effect of unsettling psychoanalytic theories and expanding them for our time.

SUMMARY:Differentiating Identification with the Aggressor From Projective Identification
DESCRIPTION:A Scientific Meeting presented by Dr. Joseph Fernando\, MDCM. In this presentation Dr. Fernando will differentiate two defenses that are important clinically but that are often confused with each other: projective identification and identification with the aggressor. He will show that differentiating these two defenses at the conceptual level can be helpful clinically. \nDr. Fernando will demonstrate that by differentiating defenses relating to different forms of the unconscious – the id versus the unconscious part of the ego\, the unconscious primary process versus the unconscious secondary process – we can come to a deeper understanding of these two defenses\, as well as of defensive processes more generally. These defenses\, and especially projective identification\, are now usually understood in terms of inner object relations. \nDr. Fernando will present a view of them which does not necessarily contradict an object relations description\, but that supplements it by approaching the two defensive processes discussed from the point of view of Freud’s original distinction between the primary and secondary modes of mental functioning.

DESCRIPTION:A Scientific Meeting presented by Dr. Joseph Fernando\, MDCM. This presentation explores the links between trauma\, guilt\, and the superego\, and through this exploration attempts to make some additions to our understanding of individual dynamics\, group regression\, and group delusions. Dr. Fernando first describes his concept of the zero process as the form of mental functioning that is a product of the breakdown of the construction of the present moment during trauma. These unconstructed\, bits and pieces memories exist as present experiences or future expectations. \nFrom time to time\, in relation to traumas that are either individual or developmental\, inner objects which have the quality of immediate presences form — we usually call them introjects. The presenter suggests that these are best conceptualized as zero process structures in having many characteristics of the zero process\, and that the obligatory connection between trauma and guilt\, and the manner of transmission of culture and the superego\, and of conspiracy theories and other group delusions\, can be better and more deeply understood once the part that zero process structures play in all these phenomena is brought into focus. \nCE

We will see how and why in this approach narcissism and the self-love\, sense of perfection and tendency to idealize associated with it\, are usually regarded as manifestations of destructive forces\, pulling towards death of oneself and of the other. DESCRIPTION:Rachel Blass presents “On the special nature of Kleinian transference interpretation\, and why it is essential to analytic cure.” \nThe idea that transference interpretation plays an important role in the analytic process is a familiar one. Underlying the London Kleinian approach is the idea that it is not only essential to the process but that only transference interpretation can bring about cure of an analytic kind. To appreciate this view\, one must consider the unique nature of analytic cure and the limitations of other forms of intervention\, including and especially other forms of interpretation of unconscious processes\, in attaining it. It will be suggested that transference interpretation\, as understood and developed by the Kleinian approach\, moves beyond promoting awareness to actively denied unconscious ideas\, and thus allows for actual change and integration of the unconscious fantasies of the inner world. Brief clinical vignettes will be presented to illustrate these ideas. \nCE Credits.

DESCRIPTION:Rachel Blass presents “A new perspective on Freud’s thinking on truth\, it’s foundational role in psychoanalysis\, and its contemporary relevance.” \nAt the foundation of Freud’s thinking is the idea that psychopathology is the result of denial. Truths denied lead to a distorted reality and accordingly coming to know these truths\, discovering the true meanings underlying distortions\, is what defines psychoanalytic practice and cure. A common criticism of this approach\, (within psychoanalysis\, as well as outside of it) ?is that it is a limited intellectual and “positivistic” one; it neglects relational\, experiential\, environmental and “pre-meaning” sources of pathology and modes of cure and hence it is ineffectual and rightly has been replaced by new analytic perspectives. \nCE Credits.

DESCRIPTION:A Scientific Meeting presented by Judy Kantrowitz\, PhD \nIn this presentation\, we will consider the importance of an outside observer in clinical work after the end of formal training. This includes but is not limited to the importance of peer supervision\, supervision groups where cases can be shared confidentially\, and other forms of clinical consultation. \nWe are all at times “blind” to some aspect of ourselves\, which we are made aware of during training\, and must continue to be addressed after training\, though this has received significantly less attention. While Transference- countertransference issues are the clearest example\, but there are other ways interference can occur\, which we will also consider\, including how the patient-analyst match can facilitate or impede a treatment’s progress. \nCE credit.

SUMMARY:Psychedelics in an Age of Freud and Pharmacology: What Happened Before\, What is Happening Now\, Why it Matters
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Anne Harrington\, Ph.D.\nIn the 1940s\, the drug company Sandoz sponsored a study of LSD at the University of Zurich which came to the conclusion that this was a drug that made normal people temporarily schizophrenic. Sandoz subsequently decided to promote LSD as a research drug for experimental investigations of schizophrenia\, and especially its possible biochemical basis. But\, somewhat confusingly\, the company also did something else: they suggested that the psychoanalysts also take a look at the drug\, because there was evidence that it gave people access to the unconscious contents of their minds and could sometimes be therapeutic. \nSo which was it: a path to madness or a path to health? A drug for the biologists to study\, or a tool for the psychoanalysts to employ? In this seminar\, I will track the contradictions and ambiguities structuring mid-20th-century clinical conversations about the meaning and uses of psychedelics. An important goal will be to identify the legacies and unfinished business from that earlier era and show the ways some of them\, perhaps unconsciously\, are shaping current efforts and conversations. \nCE Credits.

SUMMARY:The Unobtrusive Relational Analyst: Enactive Engagement and Psychoanalytic Companioning
DESCRIPTION:This Scientific Meeting will address the challenges met when working with patients who cannot “work together” with an analyst\, who are not sufficiently able to symbolize and mentalize. We will address both patients who suffer disturbances in the area of self-other definition\, continuity and regulation of self\, as well as patients who can appear to be more related and reflective\, but harbor sequestered self states that are dominated by areas of unrepresented and unsymbolized trauma and neglect.\nThis presentation will present the position of the unobtrusive relational analyst who companions the patient in the emergence of illusion\, fragmentation and non-relatedness and privileges the inner world of the patient that becomes the signature and defining sculptor of the clinical interaction and process. \nUnrepresented and unformulated trauma and neglect announce themselves in the flow of mutual enactive engagement and rather than seek to move the patient into greater relatedness and insight\, the analyst companions the patient in the emergence of yet to be known and thought narratives of trauma and fragmentation. The tilt is toward an ontological position that privileges being-with the patient rather than epistemological where meaning can be symbolized and interpreted.

SUMMARY:Supervision: A Psychoanalytic View
DESCRIPTION:Both the American Psychological and the American Psychiatric Associations have recently advocated specific courses in supervision for their trainees. Good supervision has been described in terms of specific competences or progressive skill sets\, often measured via symptom reduction in the supervisee’s clients. Emphasis has also been put on adapting supervision\, like treatment\, to areas of diversity. But there has been less attention to general developmental goals such as the supervisee’s overall professional and personal growth\, and to areas of maturation that constitute progress in both therapist and patient. This talk contextualizes clinical supervision historically\, exploring some less frequently measured areas of supervisory competence. It aims to be relevant to the practical and professional needs of both supervisors and supervisees.

SUMMARY:Race in Clinical Space: A Two-part Workshop with Kathy Pogue White\, PhD and Jill Salberg\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Session 2 will be held on September 30 @ 10:30 am – 12:30 pm EDT \nThis seminar attempts to raise awareness of unconscious states of mind around race in clinical work using a variation of the Balint method. This Method utilizes group engagement with a case problem brought by a case holder who describes a clinical vignette. The short vignette narrative can be a significant moment in working with a person of color (POC)\, either as the therapist or as a supervisor for the therapist. It can also be when both people in a dyad are white\, and race is in the material\, sometimes expressed\, often not fully engaged. For example\, the case holder feels stuck around a particular racial enactment\, is puzzled by a racialized countertransference\, or is curious about excessive positive or negative feelings towards the POC client/patient. Additionally\, if/when both parties in the dyad identify as white\, a case holder may have become aware of a gap\, an absence of material relating to race.\nIn response to the case vignette\, the group’s work is to make their associative life available to the case holder in such a way as to connect to and open up their own countertransferential experiences. The Balint hypothesis is that the unconscious of all participants will be resonant and provide access to new possibilities as to feelings and ways of seeing things. \nEach session will consist of a) an opening group plenary where a vignette is offered by a senior faculty person describing their work with a POC or white patient or with a training case with a POC supervisee. The focus is on collective deep listening to and clarifying the presenter’s experience of working and thinking in the area of racial differences and encounters. The following two sessions provide opportunities for two volunteer Seminar members to bring case vignettes. b) Working in smaller break-out groups\, the participants will use their associative life to frame a response to the presenters’ posed question. The goal is learning and enlightenment about what race means in the context of clinical work\, as highlighted by these examples. \nParticipants (candidates\, faculty/supervisors\, graduates\, and guest colleagues) commit to attending all two sessions. Readings will be sent out a week in advance. Session 2 will be held on September 30 10:30 am – 12:30 pm.
