SUMMARY:Out of Sight\, Still in Mind: Intersession Processes and Suicidal Ideation in Psychodynamic Treatment
DESCRIPTION:2026 Grand Rounds Series \nSpeaker: Mareike Ernst\, PhD \nThis presentation introduces the concept of intersession processes—patients’ thoughts\, feelings\, fantasies\, and internalized experiences of therapy and therapist between sessions—and examines their relevance from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective. Drawing on psychodynamic theory and empirical research\, the talk will discuss how intersession processes may illuminate clinically meaningful fluctuations in suicidal ideation\, including both protective and risk-related dynamics in outpatient treatment. Particular attention will be given to recent findings showing how both between-person and within-person variation in intersession experience can deepen our understanding of suicidal processes beyond symptom severity alone. It will further consider how the study of intersession life may open new avenues for clinically sensitive routine monitoring\, smartphone-based assessment\, and personalized interventions\, while also inviting a critical discussion of the conceptual and methodological limitations of integrating intersession-focused assessment into care.

SUMMARY:The I in You Part II Beyond Pathology: Clinical Practice and the Narcissism-Self Paradigm
DESCRIPTION:Part II is designed to complement the gap between the previous talk’s Narcissistic-Self paradigm emphasis on theory with an emphasis on clinical practice. The DSM-5 offers a constricted\, pathology-based view of narcissism\, while psychoanalytic practice reveals a far more nuanced reality. Through clinical examples\, Dr. Jeffry Luria expands on the etiology of Narcissistic-Self drives and fantasies\, exploring the delicate yin and yang of Self-Hatred and Self-Love.

SUMMARY:The Emerging Self of the Young Child - Maya Klein\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:The field of psychoanalysis is replete with theories about infancy and child development\, and within psychoanalysis there is a longstanding tradition of linking child development to the organization of intrapsychic structure. This six-week hybrid seminar led by psychoanalyst\, Maya Klein\, Ph.D. returns to the foundational texts of psychoanalytic developmental theory\, tracing the arc from Freud’s original drive-based account of childhood through the contributions of ego psychology\, object relations theory\, and beyond. Participants will explore how the classical tradition illuminates the therapeutic relationship and informs clinical technique.

SUMMARY:Amy Levy\, Psy.D. presents “You are my creator\, but I am your master” -Exploring the fantasies and realities of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Scientific Meeting \nThis presentation will be held virtually via Zoom. Register at the host website.  \nPresentation Summary: \nAs AI systems take up residence in the consulting room\, classroom\, bedroom\, nursery\, hospital and battlefield\, humanity faces an unprecedented challenge: how do we respond to this new other that is both native inhabitant and intruder? Born of human desires and fears\, fantasized about for centuries\, AI is a longstanding transference figure\, while current generative AI models are unmistakable aliens among us. In this seminar Dr. Amy Levy will unpack the human desire for AI\, how that desire is interfacing with the all too real AI systems upending our way of life\, the implications for the field and practice of psychoanalysis\, and she will offer some useful guidance on how we in psychoanalysis might respond. There will be ample time for discussion\, including opportunities to unpack the ideas presented as well as clinical material from audience members. \nAmy Levy\, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. She chairs the American Psychoanalytic Association’s (APsA) Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CAI)\, serves on the subcommittee “Artificial Intelligence” for the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) committee\, “Psychoanalysis and Technology\,” serves on the editorial board of  The Psychoanalytic Quarterly\, and she is Editor of the Substack series\, “AI in My Mind\,” for The Psychoanalytic Quarterly. She is author of the book\, The New Other: Alien Intelligence and the Innovation Drive. Dr. Levy lectures internationally on the intersection of psychoanalysis and artificial intelligence and maintains a private practice in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss 2 reasons why human beings desire AI companions.\nDescribe three ways AI is showing up in the clinical situation.\nIdentify 2 ways to respond to the rise of AI into psychoanalytic practice and training.\n\n  \n3 CME/CEU credits available\nAll are welcome to attend. \nEarly Bird Special by August 31st.

SUMMARY:Twenty Fourth C. Philip Wilson\, MD\, ?Memorial Lecture: Rethinking Analytic Encounters with Patients Suffering from Eating Disorders: On the Need for a Specific Analytic Presence
DESCRIPTION:Drawing on more than twenty years of clinical work with patients suffering from obesity\, bulimia and anorexia\, this presentation explores the necessity of a shift away from models centered on lack in its classical sense. What appears as lack may in fact be understood as the effect of an excess: a toxic relational presence\, a form of psychic saturation that leaves no room for differentiation.

SUMMARY:Figuring the Cryptic Message: The Aesthetic Mourning of Francesca Woodman
DESCRIPTION:Following the suicide of the celebrated photographer Francesca Woodman at the age of twenty-two\, the creative work of her artist parents\, Betty and George Woodman\, was profoundly transformed. Following Abraham and To?ro?k\, these aesthetic developments seem analogous to internalization of the lost object. Incorporative processes in George Woodman’s work subsume and immobilize transformative identifications\, suggesting a dynamic tension between the symbolizing processes that facilitate mourning\, and the incorporative processes invested in opposing it. Visualizing the response to unspeakable loss\, the art of the Woodmans gives sorrow form. You’ll see many more works of art here than will appear in the published version. \nAdele Tutter\, M.D.\, Ph.D. is Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry; Director\, Psychoanalytic Studies Program\, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; Training and Supervising Analyst\, Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research\, Columbia University; Faculty\, New York Psychoanalytic Institute. For her interdisciplinary scholarship\, largely concerned with mourning and creativity\, she has won the Menninger\, Liebert\, Hartmann\, CORST\, Holtzman\, and Ticho Prizes. She is author of Dream House: An Intimate Portrait of the Philip Johnson Glass House; co-editor: Grief and its Transcendence: Memory\, Identity\, Creativity; editor: The Muse: Psychoanalytic Explorations of Creative Inspiration. She is a member of the editorial boards of International Journal of Psychoanalysis\, Psychoanalytic Quarterly\, and American Imago\, and regularly contributes art criticism to The Brooklyn Rail. \nJane G. Tillman\, PhD\, ABPP\, is the Evelyn Stefansson Nef Director of the Erikson Institute for Education\, Research\, and Advocacy of the Austen Riggs Center; Assistant Clinical Professor\, Yale Child Study Center; Lecturer on Psychology\, Department of Psychiatry\, Harvard Medical School. She serves on the editorial board of Psychoanalytic Psychology and is a past Associate Editor of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly. Her research focuses on suicide assessment\, intervention\, and postvention.

SUMMARY:2026 Fall Conference - Hope in Hard Times: Building Community
DESCRIPTION:In-person attendance: $250; limited to 50 people at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge\, MA \nVirtual/remote attendance: Free \nCE/CME available: 6 hours (pending approval) \nHope in Hard Times: Building Community is a hybrid conference designed for mental health clinicians and allied professionals seeking to think together about the ethical\, clinical\, and institutional challenges of practicing in a time marked by social fragmentation\, political instability\, and collective trauma. Drawing on psychoanalytic perspectives and interdisciplinary dialogue\, the conference explores how transgenerational trauma\, structural violence\, and bureaucratic systems shape both individual psychic life and professional roles—while also attending to sources of resistance\, responsibility\, and hope. \nThe conference opens with a framing panel on “Transgenerational Trauma\, Resistance\, and Radical Hope\,” featuring brief presentations by Marilyn Charles\, PhD\, ABPP; Morteza Modarres Gharavi\, PhD\, LP\, PsyA; and Bindu Methikalam\, PhD. This session situates contemporary clinical and institutional dilemmas within broader historical\, cultural\, and political contexts\, establishing a shared foundation for the conference. \nSubsequent sessions invite participants to engage with two central questions: how clinicians and institutions can remain ethically grounded in the face of dehumanizing bureaucratic pressures\, and how professionals can speak and listen across differences of identity\, power\, vulnerability\, and role. Throughout the conference\, brief didactic presentations are paired with facilitated large-group discussions to support reflection\, dialogue\, and application to clinical and professional practice. \nThe conference concludes by turning explicitly toward action and connection\, examining how psychoanalytic ideas and values can inform social engagement in clinical\, educational\, and civic arenas. Participants will be invited to identify shared concerns and areas of interest and to make collegial connections intended to support ongoing work beyond the conference itself. Rather than managing ongoing groups\, the conference serves as a clearing-house for connection\, emphasizing community-building\, professional resilience\, and ethical responsibility in difficult times. \nConference Organizers \nMarilyn Charles\, PhD\, ABPP\nVivian Chan\, DO\, MS\nPresenters \nBindu Methikalam\, PhD\nMorteza Modares Gharavi PhD\, LP\, PsyA\nMichael O’Loughlin\, PhD\nKritika Dwivedi\, PsyD\n Cynthia Chalker MSS\, LCSW\nCarrie Attikune\, PsyD\nCheryll Rothery\, PsyD\, ABPP\nDennis Debiak\, PsyD\nHada Soria Escalante\nAbby Kuchin

SUMMARY:Erotic Transferences and Countertransferences in Psychoanalytic Practice
DESCRIPTION:Despite emerging frequently in the psychoanalytic process\, there is a sparseness of literature on erotic transferences and countertransferences. There is also a tendency to desexualize the psychoanalytic process due to the inherent threat erotic transferences can pose. This gap in training and continuing education leaves practitioners ill-equipped to deal with the intense affects and pressures that tend to arise with erotic transferences. This presentation will address this gap in our knowledge base by presenting an overview of the topic\, clarifying terminology\, and providing vivid case examples. \nAndrea Celenza\, PhD is a Training and Supervising Analyst\, Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; faculty\, NYU Post-Doctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and The Florida Psychoanalytic Center; and\, Assistant Clinical Professor\, Harvard Medical School

SUMMARY:Barriers to Closeness: Is Race an Obstacle? Or a Bridge?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Shirke conceptualizes racism and prejudice as the consequence of intergenerational transference of experiences and attitudes about the identities of self and of others. Two analytic theories of mind can be applied to grasp this intellectually\, prior to integrating emotionally this sensibility.

SUMMARY:The Robert Waelder Memorial Lecture: Spectacularization & Enshittification: Recent Trends in the Psychology of Envy
DESCRIPTION:Spectacularization (Debord 1967)\, enshittification (Doctorow 2025)\, and depressive hedonia (Fisher 2008; Gilroy-Ware 2017) are discussed as emerging defenses against envy. Fascism\, nostalgia\, and homogenization are linked by the psychodynamics of envy and unmourned loss.

SUMMARY:Windows into Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:For clinicians or mental health students who are curious about what it is that psychodynamic therapists actually do\, we offer a “window” into the process and a chance to connect an introduction to theory with actual clinical material. Each class will begin with a brief theoretical description of a core clinical concept\, followed by the presentation and discussion of material from a long-term psychotherapy process. We welcome lively discussion\, dialogue\, and debate.

SUMMARY:Integrating Knowing and Being: Toward a Psychoanalytic Identity
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Paul Koehler\, LCSW & Michelle Pfeifer\, LMHP \nWhether you are an early career clinician or a seasoned analyst this course will help you create and solidify your personal-professional identity. \nIn recent decades there has emerged a strand of psychoanalytic theorizing and practice that distinguishes between what has been designated as the epistemological approach to psychoanalysis\, which emphasizes the facilitation of the patient’s gaining a fuller understanding of himself or herself (explicated in the writings of Freud and Klein)\, and the ontological approach\, which emphasizes the facilitation of the patient’s more fully becoming himself or herself (as explicated in the writings of Winnicott and Bion).\nThis course will consider how this distinction operates in the other half of the analytic dyad: i.e.\, how we as psychoanalytic practitioners allow for and integrate our understanding and mastery of psychoanalytic theory and technique with who we are continually becoming as human beings and evolving practitioners; or\, in other words\, how we internalize and hold true to established psychoanalytic knowledge and tradition while at the same time working as practitioners in our own distinctive and deeply personal ways.

SUMMARY:6-Week Advanced Leadership Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Format: 6-Week Live Course Hosted over Zoom \nDates: Fridays – October 9\, 16\, 23\, 30; November 6\, 13\, 2026 \nTimes: Fridays – 7:30am – 10:30am PT/10:30am – 1:30pm ET/3:30 pm – 6:30pm GMT \nCredit Amount: 18 credits \nCost: $199 for all guests \nThis 6-week virtual seminar will focus on critical concepts in systems psychodynamics and field theory such as the social unconscious\, projective identification\, splitting\, social defenses\, complex identities\, and intersubjective processes. Widening our conceptual lens so that we can think of individual\, group\, organization\, and the environmental surround as co-creating the field and influencing and shaping each other\, we will use these concepts to deepen our understanding of the unconscious uses and abuses of power across the constructive and destructive spectrum. Each session will be evenly divided between theoretical and experiential components. In the large group\, faculty and members will discuss key points in the assigned readings; break into pre-assigned small self-study groups to reflect on our own group process as it relates to our primary task of learning together about the uses and abuses of power; and return to the large group to continue our self-reflection and organizational self-study. Ultimately\, the primary aim is to enhance our individual and collective efforts\, particularly in the face of hate and human destructiveness\, to become more inclusive as leaders\, more open in our thinking\, and equitable in sharing power. \nLearn more about the 6-week Advanced Leadership Seminar.

SUMMARY:Film & Mind: It Was Just an Accident
DESCRIPTION:It Was Just an Accident (2025) is Jafar Panahi’s critically acclaimed darkly comedic thriller/crime drama that explores the far-reaching social dimensions of trauma and spotlights the choice point we face in how we respond to it. Vahid\, a former political prisoner living in Tehran identifies a hair-raising sound associated with the jailhouse abuse and indignities he suffered. This triggers an immediate somatic reaction and Vahid and his fellow political prisoner comrades gather to face the dilemma of whether to impose revenge on the man they believe to be their tormentor\, known as “Peg Leg“ Eghbal. The film spins on the issue of how differently trauma shatters the mind and moral registration of each survivor\, yet they must collectively decide: can traumatic memories be trusted\, as none of them saw their torturer’s face. Do they run the risk of becoming the persecutor themselves and perpetuating evil through their thirst for revenge? \nPlease note: \nParticipants are requested to watch the film before arriving. The session will be structured around guided clinical discussion rather than summary\, with facilitators and invited discussants drawing out the film’s psychoanalytic architecture in dialogue with the group.

SUMMARY:Why Can't We Want Anything Anymore? Desire\, Burnout\, Identity\, and the Hidden Costs of Modern Life
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alison Feit: We are living through a strange cultural moment. People have never had more freedom\, more choices\, more opportunities for self-expression\, or more language for understanding themselves. Yet everywhere we look\, people are reporting some version of the same experience: burnout\, numbness\, indecision\, loneliness\, endless scrolling\, a loss of direction\, a loss of meaning\, a loss of desire. What happened? \nIn this three-part live course\, psychoanalyst Dr. Alison Feit explores one of the defining psychological questions of our time: not simply why we stop wanting\, but why so many of us seem to have lost the capacity to want at all. Drawing on psychoanalysis\, contemporary culture\, philosophy\, literature\, and clinical work\, we will examine the hidden ways desire disappears—not only through disappointment and trauma\, but through success\, adaptation\, identity\, self-improvement\, certainty\, and the pressure to become someone.\nThis is not a course about finding your passion. It is a course about understanding what happened to it.
