SUMMARY:Film & Mind: Don’t Look Up
DESCRIPTION:“This administration has lost it’s f-ing mind and we are all going to die!” bellows a vein popping Leonardo DiCaprio. Don’t Look Up (2021) captures the dangerous emotional crosscurrents when human nature is confronted with existential terror. Astronomers — Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence)\, his doctoral student — discover a comet on a direct collision course with Earth. They carry their findings to the White House and what follows is not a disaster film\, but a savage psychological and sociological portrait of America’s collective response to existential threat. The public becomes divided – those who can “look up” and those who cannot. \nIn their quest to educate and inform the government and the world\, astronomers Mindy and Dibiasky tango with sex\, power\, denial\, distraction\, and defensive grandiosity. We have the opportunity\, if we can muster our own courage\, to consider the psychodynamics inherent in facing looming catastrophe. \nPlease note: Participants are requested to watch the film before arriving. The session will be structured around guided clinical discussion rather than summary\, with facilitators and invited discussants drawing out the film’s psychoanalytic architecture in dialogue with the group. \nPlease note:\nParticipants are requested to watch the film before arriving. SUMMARY:Unlocking Minds: Dive Into The Racial Unconscious
DESCRIPTION:This half-day conference offers a psychoanalytic examination of racialization as it is lived\, felt\, and structured within psychic life. \nRamya B. Iyer\, LCSW\, introduces societal racial introjection\, a proposed mechanism by which social racial logics become constitutive of psychic structure. Gabriel Ruiz\, LCPC\, explores racialized transference and countertransference in the treatment relationship\, and Molly Witten\, PhD\, extends these dynamics into supervision.

SUMMARY:A Slice of Resistance: A Masterclass for Intensive Psychotherapists
DESCRIPTION:In this masterclass for licensed therapists\, participants will actively review in fine detail a subtitled clinical video with in-depth discussion with Jon Frederickson and Thomas Brod. The video is edited from a single multi-hour consultation in which Jon Frederickson interviews an extraordinarily resistant patient. The case\, called “The Man Who Thought Therapy Was Bullshit\,” demonstrates advanced technique for managing high resistance and omnipotent defenses against characterological depression. Frederickson incorporates clinical insights of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) into his own psychodynamic technique. This course is built out of detailed discussion with audience-participants of the moment-to-moment choice points by the clinician. This course is limited to licensed professionals. \nJon Frederickson\, MSW is an internationally prominent psychotherapist\, author\, and master instructor specializing in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). He is best known for his award-winning books on dynamic therapy techniques\, his international teaching\, and his focus on deliberate practice in psychotherapy. He conducts extensive core training and supervision programs globally\, with teaching engagements spanning the U.S.\, Norway\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Poland\, Australia\, and India. He has written over 50 published papers and chapters\, including: \nClinical Thinking in Psychotherapy: What It Is\, How It Works\, and Why and How to Teach It\nHealing Through Relating: A Skill-Building Book for Therapists\nCo-Creating Safety: Healing the Fragile Patient\nThe Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Face the Truth\, Accept Yourself\, and Create a Better Life \nCo-Creating Change: Effective Dynamic Therapy Techniques (Winner of the 2014 British Medical Association Book Awards\, First Prize in Psychiatry)\nThomas Brod\, MD is senior faculty New Center for Psychoanalysis and former Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. \nHe coordinates the NCP Film & Mind series and the NCP Manifest Mind series. A psychoanalyst in private practice\, his background includes study of ISTDP with Robert Neborsky and Habid Davanloo. His most recent publication is on psychoanalytic philosophy of the psychedelic mind\, “I AM…gone”: Persistence of Subjectivity in Psychedelic States.

SUMMARY:Violence in the Consulting Room | IJP Conference 2027
DESCRIPTION:Four papers from leading psychoanalysts: \nOtto Kernberg\, Michael Feldman\, Sara Boffito\, and Sun Ju Chung. \nChaired by Francis Grier\, Editor-In-Chief\, International Journal of Psychoanalysis \nA recording of the conference will be shared with all those who register. Foreign language subtitles will be available. \n\nViolence takes an infinite number of forms. In recent times\, the IJP has explored extreme external violence and its causes. In this year’s IJP Conference\, we turn the focus inward\, to our specialised area of the consulting room and the psychoanalytic couple. Here\, physical acts of violence may still occur\, but our main concern will be violence in the transference and countertransference – sometimes overt\, but often subtle\, including unconscious forms of hostile aggression. This too takes an infinite number of forms. \nThe psychological violence experienced by many children in the supposedly safe environment of their homes – from parents\, siblings and close relatives – may become a dynamic part of their characters\, later enacted with the analyst. The roles of violator and victim can move fluidly between analyst and patient. But if this is internalised violence\, we must also consider violence arising from the innate character of the young child. Violence can sometimes be on the side of life\, and it is not always easy to distinguish this from more spoiling\, envious or sadomasochistic forms of violence that generate deep gratifications and addictions\, which are notoriously difficult to understand\, let alone to shift – and which again are enacted within the analytic couple. A feature of the conference papers is that these issues will be explored not only in relation to adult psychoanalysis\, but also through clinical work with adolescents and young children\, in all cases with analytic authors who are leaders in our contemporary field. \nChaired by Francis Grier\, Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis\, the conference explores these vital psychoanalytic questions of our time. \n\nProgramme\n11.00 – 11.15 Welcome and Introduction: Francis Grier \n11.15 – 12.30 Paper 1: Michael Feldman — Lamashtu: Toxic Envy in the Environment of the Psychoanalytic Consulting Room \n1.00 – 2.15 Paper 2: Sara Boffito — “In Search of Existence”: Violence and Narrative Play in the Analysis of a Young Child \n2.30 – 3.45 Paper 3: Sun Ju Chung — To Be Found in the Dark: Violence\, Attachment\, and Object Survival in the Analysis of an Adolescent \n4.15 – 5.30 Paper 4: Otto Kernberg — Title TBC \n5.30 – 6.00 — Concluding remarks

SUMMARY:Inner Frame Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Inner Frame Film Festival is an evening of curated short films created by psychoanalysts and others who are deeply connected to psychoanalytic thought\, treatment and practice.  It is a community event created for discussion and engagement around representation of unconscious dynamics\, the experiences that take place in the therapeutic process and the powerful ideas about psychic life that help shape our understanding of ourselves and others. Purchase tickets to the Inner Frame Film Festival on Eventbrite. \nCreated and funded by PEP-Web.org (the online archive of everything psychoanalytic)\, the Inner Frame Festival showcases six films each under ten minutes and each of which offers unique insights into various aspects of psychoanalytic thought. \nEach film is also a collaborative process between the analytic therapist and some combination of illustrators\, animators\, filmmakers\, videographers and other artists help bring to life something of the emotional experience of the psychoanalytic encounter (an emotional experience —sometimes within one person\, sometimes between people and sometimes with the ideas themselves). \nThe first evening of this soon-to-be annual and soon-to-be international film festival will take place on January 16\, 2027 at the SVA Theatre 333 W 23rd St\, New York\, NY 10011. Please join us for conversation\, reflection and engagement. \nThanks to a grant from the American Psychoanalytic Foundation\, the festival will also be doing a West Coast tour in 2027 and can be seen in Seattle\, Portland\, San Francisco\, Los Angeles and San Diego. \nBe sure to look for updates for times and locations.
