SUMMARY:2026 Fall Conference - Hope in Hard Times: Building Community
DESCRIPTION:In-person attendance: $250; limited to 50 people at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge\, MA \nVirtual/remote attendance: Free \nCE/CME available: 6 hours (pending approval) \nHope in Hard Times: Building Community is a hybrid conference designed for mental health clinicians and allied professionals seeking to think together about the ethical\, clinical\, and institutional challenges of practicing in a time marked by social fragmentation\, political instability\, and collective trauma. Drawing on psychoanalytic perspectives and interdisciplinary dialogue\, the conference explores how transgenerational trauma\, structural violence\, and bureaucratic systems shape both individual psychic life and professional roles—while also attending to sources of resistance\, responsibility\, and hope. \nThe conference opens with a framing panel on “Transgenerational Trauma\, Resistance\, and Radical Hope\,” featuring brief presentations by Marilyn Charles\, PhD\, ABPP; Morteza Modarres Gharavi\, PhD\, LP\, PsyA; and Bindu Methikalam\, PhD. This session situates contemporary clinical and institutional dilemmas within broader historical\, cultural\, and political contexts\, establishing a shared foundation for the conference. \nSubsequent sessions invite participants to engage with two central questions: how clinicians and institutions can remain ethically grounded in the face of dehumanizing bureaucratic pressures\, and how professionals can speak and listen across differences of identity\, power\, vulnerability\, and role. Throughout the conference\, brief didactic presentations are paired with facilitated large-group discussions to support reflection\, dialogue\, and application to clinical and professional practice. \nThe conference concludes by turning explicitly toward action and connection\, examining how psychoanalytic ideas and values can inform social engagement in clinical\, educational\, and civic arenas. Participants will be invited to identify shared concerns and areas of interest and to make collegial connections intended to support ongoing work beyond the conference itself. Rather than managing ongoing groups\, the conference serves as a clearing-house for connection\, emphasizing community-building\, professional resilience\, and ethical responsibility in difficult times. \nConference Organizers \nMarilyn Charles\, PhD\, ABPP\nVivian Chan\, DO\, MS\nPresenters \nBindu Methikalam\, PhD\nMorteza Modares Gharavi PhD\, LP\, PsyA\nMichael O’Loughlin\, PhD\nKritika Dwivedi\, PsyD\n Cynthia Chalker MSS\, LCSW\nCarrie Attikune\, PsyD\nCheryll Rothery\, PsyD\, ABPP\nDennis Debiak\, PsyD\nHada Soria Escalante\nAbby Kuchin

SUMMARY:Erotic Transferences and Countertransferences in Psychoanalytic Practice
DESCRIPTION:Despite emerging frequently in the psychoanalytic process\, there is a sparseness of literature on erotic transferences and countertransferences. There is also a tendency to desexualize the psychoanalytic process due to the inherent threat erotic transferences can pose. This gap in training and continuing education leaves practitioners ill-equipped to deal with the intense affects and pressures that tend to arise with erotic transferences. This presentation will address this gap in our knowledge base by presenting an overview of the topic\, clarifying terminology\, and providing vivid case examples. \nAndrea Celenza\, PhD is a Training and Supervising Analyst\, Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute; faculty\, NYU Post-Doctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and The Florida Psychoanalytic Center; and\, Assistant Clinical Professor\, Harvard Medical School

SUMMARY:Barriers to Closeness: Is Race an Obstacle? Or a Bridge?
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Shirke conceptualizes racism and prejudice as the consequence of intergenerational transference of experiences and attitudes about the identities of self and of others. Two analytic theories of mind can be applied to grasp this intellectually\, prior to integrating emotionally this sensibility.

SUMMARY:Windows into Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:For clinicians or mental health students who are curious about what it is that psychodynamic therapists actually do\, we offer a “window” into the process and a chance to connect an introduction to theory with actual clinical material. Each class will begin with a brief theoretical description of a core clinical concept\, followed by the presentation and discussion of material from a long-term psychotherapy process. We welcome lively discussion\, dialogue\, and debate.

SUMMARY:Integrating Knowing and Being: Toward a Psychoanalytic Identity
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Paul Koehler\, LCSW & Michelle Pfeifer\, LMHP \nWhether you are an early career clinician or a seasoned analyst this course will help you create and solidify your personal-professional identity. \nIn recent decades there has emerged a strand of psychoanalytic theorizing and practice that distinguishes between what has been designated as the epistemological approach to psychoanalysis\, which emphasizes the facilitation of the patient’s gaining a fuller understanding of himself or herself (explicated in the writings of Freud and Klein)\, and the ontological approach\, which emphasizes the facilitation of the patient’s more fully becoming himself or herself (as explicated in the writings of Winnicott and Bion).\nThis course will consider how this distinction operates in the other half of the analytic dyad: i.e.\, how we as psychoanalytic practitioners allow for and integrate our understanding and mastery of psychoanalytic theory and technique with who we are continually becoming as human beings and evolving practitioners; or\, in other words\, how we internalize and hold true to established psychoanalytic knowledge and tradition while at the same time working as practitioners in our own distinctive and deeply personal ways.

SUMMARY:6-Week Advanced Leadership Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Format: 6-Week Live Course Hosted over Zoom \nDates: Fridays – October 9\, 16\, 23\, 30; November 6\, 13\, 2026 \nTimes: Fridays – 7:30am – 10:30am PT/10:30am – 1:30pm ET/3:30 pm – 6:30pm GMT \nCredit Amount: 18 credits \nCost: $199 for all guests \nThis 6-week virtual seminar will focus on critical concepts in systems psychodynamics and field theory such as the social unconscious\, projective identification\, splitting\, social defenses\, complex identities\, and intersubjective processes. Widening our conceptual lens so that we can think of individual\, group\, organization\, and the environmental surround as co-creating the field and influencing and shaping each other\, we will use these concepts to deepen our understanding of the unconscious uses and abuses of power across the constructive and destructive spectrum. Each session will be evenly divided between theoretical and experiential components. In the large group\, faculty and members will discuss key points in the assigned readings; break into pre-assigned small self-study groups to reflect on our own group process as it relates to our primary task of learning together about the uses and abuses of power; and return to the large group to continue our self-reflection and organizational self-study. Ultimately\, the primary aim is to enhance our individual and collective efforts\, particularly in the face of hate and human destructiveness\, to become more inclusive as leaders\, more open in our thinking\, and equitable in sharing power. \nLearn more about the 6-week Advanced Leadership Seminar.

SUMMARY:Film & Mind: It Was Just an Accident
DESCRIPTION:It Was Just an Accident (2025) is Jafar Panahi’s critically acclaimed darkly comedic thriller/crime drama that explores the far-reaching social dimensions of trauma and spotlights the choice point we face in how we respond to it. Vahid\, a former political prisoner living in Tehran identifies a hair-raising sound associated with the jailhouse abuse and indignities he suffered. This triggers an immediate somatic reaction and Vahid and his fellow political prisoner comrades gather to face the dilemma of whether to impose revenge on the man they believe to be their tormentor\, known as “Peg Leg“ Eghbal. The film spins on the issue of how differently trauma shatters the mind and moral registration of each survivor\, yet they must collectively decide: can traumatic memories be trusted\, as none of them saw their torturer’s face. Do they run the risk of becoming the persecutor themselves and perpetuating evil through their thirst for revenge? \nPlease note: \nParticipants are requested to watch the film before arriving. The session will be structured around guided clinical discussion rather than summary\, with facilitators and invited discussants drawing out the film’s psychoanalytic architecture in dialogue with the group.

SUMMARY:Why Can't We Want Anything Anymore? Desire\, Burnout\, Identity\, and the Hidden Costs of Modern Life
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alison Feit: We are living through a strange cultural moment. People have never had more freedom\, more choices\, more opportunities for self-expression\, or more language for understanding themselves. Yet everywhere we look\, people are reporting some version of the same experience: burnout\, numbness\, indecision\, loneliness\, endless scrolling\, a loss of direction\, a loss of meaning\, a loss of desire. What happened? \nIn this three-part live course\, psychoanalyst Dr. Alison Feit explores one of the defining psychological questions of our time: not simply why we stop wanting\, but why so many of us seem to have lost the capacity to want at all. Drawing on psychoanalysis\, contemporary culture\, philosophy\, literature\, and clinical work\, we will examine the hidden ways desire disappears—not only through disappointment and trauma\, but through success\, adaptation\, identity\, self-improvement\, certainty\, and the pressure to become someone.\nThis is not a course about finding your passion. It is a course about understanding what happened to it.

SUMMARY:Lee Jaffe Candidates’ Council Paper Prize's Semifinalist Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Free Association\, Racial Slurs\, and Social Justice: A Psychoanalytic Collision Course\n\nAuthor and Presenter: Emily Frank\, Ed.D.\nDiscussant: Dorothy E. Holmes\, Ph.D.\n\n\nEmily S. Frank\, Ed.D. will elucidate the dilemmas that can arise when a clinician seeks to promote free association and simultaneously attaches pejorative value to racial slurs\, silently deeming some words unspeakable because of a conscious desire to embody social justice values. The judgment of a patient’s words as unspeakable may have innumerable unconscious meanings for the clinician as well as the patient. The author examines potential dynamic meanings of patients’ use of racial slurs in white clinician/white patient dyads and also considers how the clinician’s social justice values can operate as a tension–potentially expansive or constricting–within psychoanalytic treatment. \n\nSaturday\, October 17\, 2026 from 1-3 PM ET. This is a free event open to all members. Register via the Member Portal.\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily S. Frank\, Ed.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Boston and a candidate in the Adult Psychoanalysis Program at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (BPSI). Her article\, “Profile: Dorothy Evans Holmes: Psychoanalytic Visionary” has been published online in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and will be in print in an upcoming issue of the journal. \n\n\n\n\nDorothy Evans Holmes\, PhD\, is a Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas and Teaching and Training Analyst Emerita at the same Center. Dr. Holmes is widely published on the psychoanalytic understanding of race\, class\, and gender. Her most recent peer-reviewed article is: Evans Holmes\, D. (2026). Hatred: A Traumatizing Underpinning of Racism. Psychoanalytic Inquiry\, 46(8)\, 828–832. She currently serves in several capacities on the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA): on the Board on Race in Psychoanalysis\, the Advisory Board\, and the Book Review Advisory Board. Formerly\, she has served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and JAPA. She is a recipient of the JAPA Prize (2021)\, the Sigourney Award (2022) and the Hans W. Loewald Memorial Award (2025). She was the eponymous chair of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in American Psychoanalysis (2020-2024). Dr. Holmes lives and works in Bluffton\, SC.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Donald Winnicott’s 1968 Encounter and the Ongoing Limits of Regional Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:The history of psychoanalysis since Freud has been marked by fragmentation into multiple theoretical schools\, often with limited dialogue across them. M. Nasir Ilahi\, LLM\, LP’s paper examines the deeper reasons for such failures of communication—focusing on schools that originate across transatlantic traditions\, specifically the US and the UK. It proposes that these failures cannot be explained solely in terms of intellectual divergence\, but must also be understood in relation to “internalized psychoanalytic cultures”—the non-conscious cultural value systems that shape the development\, reception\, and practice of analytic theories within a given geographical culture. Focusing on the reception of D.W. Winnicott’s “The Use of an Object” paper at NYPSI in 1968\, Ilahi illustrates how a lack of awareness of differing underlying cultural frameworks and implicit worldviews—especially between British Object Relations theory and American Ego Psychology—obstructed meaningful dialogue despite a shared professional language on the surface. Whereas British approaches emphasize the preverbal mind\, unconscious phantasy\, and early object relations\, American ego psychology privileged adaptation\, verbal processes\, and later developmental stages. These transatlantic confusions continue to the present day\, as will be briefly illustrated by the case of Thomas Ogden\, where despite an explicit affinity at the level of theoretical statements\, clinical work remains firmly—and unknowingly—rooted in North American traditions. These divergences demonstrate that theories in psychoanalysis migrate unevenly across cultural contexts\, often undergoing unconscious transformations. While recognizing the influence of such internalized cultures—rather than assuming universal agreement on psychoanalytic concepts—may create anxieties that our theories are not free of local values (and thus not totally “scientific”)\, it nevertheless offers a way forward for more genuine dialogue across schools and geographies\, helping to differentiate what is regional versus universal in our theories. The paper argues that without acknowledging the cultural and non-conscious foundations of theoretical orientations\, psychoanalysis risks perpetuating confusion\, false consensus\, and seriously missed opportunities for growth and global relevance.

SUMMARY:Resilience and Survival: The Ongoing Journeys of Native Americans
DESCRIPTION:This 8-session seminar\, led by Paul Koehler\, LCSW and Karen Fraley\, LCSW\, will be structured around the careful reading and study of the book\, The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present\, by David Tueuer. This book challenges the notion that Native American culture perished with the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. It\, rather\, chronicles the struggles of Native American tribes and individuals as they encountered\, navigated\, and in many ways have overcome the many and varied obstacles they have confronted on their journeys to sustain their ancestral\, pluralistic cultures while at the same time seeking to assimilate into the larger American cultural landscape.
