SUMMARY:Out of Sight\, Still in Mind: Intersession Processes and Suicidal Ideation in Psychodynamic Treatment
DESCRIPTION:2026 Grand Rounds Series \nSpeaker: Mareike Ernst\, PhD \nThis presentation introduces the concept of intersession processes—patients’ thoughts\, feelings\, fantasies\, and internalized experiences of therapy and therapist between sessions—and examines their relevance from a contemporary psychodynamic perspective. Drawing on psychodynamic theory and empirical research\, the talk will discuss how intersession processes may illuminate clinically meaningful fluctuations in suicidal ideation\, including both protective and risk-related dynamics in outpatient treatment. Particular attention will be given to recent findings showing how both between-person and within-person variation in intersession experience can deepen our understanding of suicidal processes beyond symptom severity alone. It will further consider how the study of intersession life may open new avenues for clinically sensitive routine monitoring\, smartphone-based assessment\, and personalized interventions\, while also inviting a critical discussion of the conceptual and methodological limitations of integrating intersession-focused assessment into care.

SUMMARY:The Emerging Self of the Young Child - Maya Klein\, Ph.D.
DESCRIPTION:The field of psychoanalysis is replete with theories about infancy and child development\, and within psychoanalysis there is a longstanding tradition of linking child development to the organization of intrapsychic structure. This six-week hybrid seminar led by psychoanalyst\, Maya Klein\, Ph.D. returns to the foundational texts of psychoanalytic developmental theory\, tracing the arc from Freud’s original drive-based account of childhood through the contributions of ego psychology\, object relations theory\, and beyond. Participants will explore how the classical tradition illuminates the therapeutic relationship and informs clinical technique.

SUMMARY:Amy Levy\, Psy.D. presents “You are my creator\, but I am your master” -Exploring the fantasies and realities of Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Scientific Meeting \nThis presentation will be held virtually via Zoom. Register at the host website.  \nPresentation Summary: \nAs AI systems take up residence in the consulting room\, classroom\, bedroom\, nursery\, hospital and battlefield\, humanity faces an unprecedented challenge: how do we respond to this new other that is both native inhabitant and intruder? Born of human desires and fears\, fantasized about for centuries\, AI is a longstanding transference figure\, while current generative AI models are unmistakable aliens among us. In this seminar Dr. Amy Levy will unpack the human desire for AI\, how that desire is interfacing with the all too real AI systems upending our way of life\, the implications for the field and practice of psychoanalysis\, and she will offer some useful guidance on how we in psychoanalysis might respond. There will be ample time for discussion\, including opportunities to unpack the ideas presented as well as clinical material from audience members. \nAmy Levy\, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst. She chairs the American Psychoanalytic Association’s (APsA) Commission on Artificial Intelligence (CAI)\, serves on the subcommittee “Artificial Intelligence” for the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA) committee\, “Psychoanalysis and Technology\,” serves on the editorial board of  The Psychoanalytic Quarterly\, and she is Editor of the Substack series\, “AI in My Mind\,” for The Psychoanalytic Quarterly. She is author of the book\, The New Other: Alien Intelligence and the Innovation Drive. Dr. Levy lectures internationally on the intersection of psychoanalysis and artificial intelligence and maintains a private practice in Chapel Hill\, North Carolina. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDiscuss 2 reasons why human beings desire AI companions.\nDescribe three ways AI is showing up in the clinical situation.\nIdentify 2 ways to respond to the rise of AI into psychoanalytic practice and training.\n\n  \n3 CME/CEU credits available\nAll are welcome to attend. \nEarly Bird Special by August 31st.
