DESCRIPTION:Bruce Fink joins NCP to discuss Lacan’s Clinical Theory”Analysts on the whole imagine that to understand is an end in itself… To think\, it is often better not to understand; and one can gallop along\, understanding for miles and miles\, without the slightest thought being produced.” – Lacan\, 1958 \nThis meeting is designed for analytically oriented therapists interested in learning how Lacan’s ideas translate into clinical practice. Lacan’s clinical theory will be spelled out in detail; attendees need not be pre-acquainted with Lacan’s work. Attendees should come away with a solid grasp of the reasoning behind the Lacanian emphasis on bringing about four specific change-producing clinical events. The goal of this program is to challenge preconceived notions about how therapy works–particularly\, the belief that psychic change chiefly results from a conveyance of the analyst’s knowledge about the patient to the patient—typically in the form of interpretations. The program is structured as a dialogue between student (Richard Tuch) and teacher (Bruce Fink). \nLacan emphasized the task of creating a facilitating environment favoring the emergence of sequestered psychic content that comes forth unwittingly when free association reveals to the patient things he barely knew he knew until he heard himself say as much out loud. Lacanians also facilitate a patient’s use of symbolic (meaningful) speech and tolerance of uncertainty and states of unknowing. \nA study of Lacan’s clinical theory calls for nothing less than a thoughtful reconsideration of psychoanalysis’ most basic assumptions about how therapy effects change: \nWhether the unconscious can be made conscious.\nWhether improving a patient’s tolerance of uncertainty and the unknown is a clinically vital goal.\nWhether deconstructing (calling into question) a patient’s core assumptions and prevailing beliefs about who he is as a person is as centrally important as Lacanians claim it to be.\nWhether treatment is better served when the analyst is less forthcoming and less clear about his ideas about the patient.\nWhether it is important to conduct treatment in a fashion that emphasizes the patient’s responsibility for his suffering and for the lion’s share of the clinical work.

SUMMARY:Potential Space and Organizational Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Presented by M. Gerard Fromm\, PhD \nIn January\, 2002\, an annual Group Relations Conference was held as it had been for many years\, and one of its large-group events began ordinarily enough. But\, four months after 9/11/2001\, members could not stay in the room to do the work of that session. Even though the recent disaster was never mentioned\, the group acted as though the public space had become “Ground Zero”\, and they fled to their small groups. The “potential space”\, the space for play\, for a vitalizing sense that something could happen instantly became an unconscious certainty that disaster would happen. The seven or so people left in what felt like the debris spontaneously decided to study the effects of 9/11 on the conference – clearly taking up a piece of work on behalf of everyone: the work of studying how trauma had collapsed potential space. This presentation will examine this question through three case examples.

DESCRIPTION:Addressing the challenges presented by systemic racism\, discrimination\, and othering in our psychoanalytic and community-based organizations is a long-term\, multi-generational endeavor. As part of that effort\, the Council for Leadership and Organizational Studies (CLOS) of the Department of Psychoanalytic Education (DPE)\, American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA)\, in collaboration with the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA)\, is offering an innovative virtual course to the future international leaders of psychoanalysis: current candidates\, students\, and recent graduates of psychoanalytic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy programs. Enhancing their knowledge and skills in leadership and group dynamics will help them\, their psychoanalytic organizations\, and other community-based organizations in which they participate to more effectively address the challenges of systemic racism and othering. \nThis virtual seminar will explore critical concepts in systems psychodynamics and field theory\, such as intersubjective processes\, group relations\, the social unconscious\, projective identifications\, splitting\,  and social defenses. Thinking of the individual and the group simultaneously\, developing what Bion referred to as binocular vision\, we will deepen our understanding of racism and othering in ourselves and in the groups in which we are embedded. In addition\, we will consider applications of these concepts organizationally to enhance our individual and collective efforts to become more inclusive\, more open in our thinking\, and equitable in sharing power. Each session will be evenly divided between theoretical and experiential components. In the group-as-a-whole we will discuss key points in the assigned readings. Then we will break into pre-assigned small self-study groups to observe and reflect on our own group process as it relates to our learning together about racism and othering. Membership in the small groups will remain constant throughout the course. There is no charge for this course. Forty years after the publication of In a Different Voice\, considered by the Harvard University Press as “the little book that started a revolution\,” Dr. Gilligan expands her ideas regarding morality and self to introduce care ethics which she conceptualizes as a voice of resistance and liberation. She will explain how patriarchy and gender binaries lead to inequity and breakdowns of choice\, such as we are seeing in the dismantling of reproductive rights and how the cherished psychoanalytic values of privacy and personal freedom are impacted by the intrusion of government control. We will look at how we may work as psychotherapists and psychoanalysts to nurture the human voice from a theoretical\, clinical\, professional\, and citizen perspective.

DESCRIPTION:Sylvia Flescher\, M.D.\, will join us in person on Friday\, November 17th\, and share with us excerpts from her memoir-in-progress. Her memoir describes the evolution of her identity as a clinician since her analytic training in the ’80s. Dr. Flescher will talk about the origins and development of her ambivalence towards psychoanalysis\, considering the role that her training analysis played as well as the impact that her father –an analyst\, psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor– had on her. \nIn a poignant and open way\, she will share with us how she struggled to find her own voice\, and how her life experiences exemplify the phenomenon of intergenerational transmission of trauma. Dr. Flescher’s presentation will address the unique trajectory that each clinician paves through their own life experiences\, and will show how writing a memoir can support and extend the working through process for analysts across their professional life. She sees her memoir as both an homage to her father and as a means of exorcising him and his long shadow from her psyche. \nCE available

Eng\, PhD & ShinHee Han\, PhD \nIn this workshop\, we will consider how social and psychic processes of loss for Asian Americans are mediated\, mitigated\, and exacerbated by the problem of guilt. Scholars working on identity politics have embraced a range of affective states — including melancholy\, pride\, shame\, and anger — as theoretically and politically productive emotions. In contrast\, guilt is more typically attributed to others than assumed by the self. Indeed\, discerning the guilt of others is often a means of proclaiming the righteousness of one’s self. If guilt is the sine qua non for initiating psychic processes of repair in object relations\, how does the repudiation of guilt foreclose the possibility of reparation? More specifically\, how do Asian Americans hold\, embrace\, and repress guilt such that reparation of both the other and the self become impossible?

DESCRIPTION:Connections and Conversation is a free monthly Zoom meeting. This conversation will explore the space between violence and trauma is dangerous silence. Time\, space and history collides. Silence intensifies the impact of trauma\, and trauma that goes unspoken\, un-witnessed and unclaimed produces more trauma to self and others. Silence can be associated with a ghost\, as a metaphorical tool. Ghosts\, like the memory of trauma are both “there” and “not there” at the same moment\, making them ripe for the same “fact or fiction” scrutiny applied to massive trauma\, disbelief and outright denial. They are the keeper of secrets\, and they are the manifestations of something gone wrong. Their lingering on the living goes on for generations.

DESCRIPTION:Carol Gilligan joins NCP to discuss her newly released book In a Human Voice.\nIt has been over forty years since the publication of Gilligan’s revolutionary book In a Different Voice (1982)\, when she amplified women’s voices on self and moral development\, helping them to be heard in their own right\, and with their own integrity. With In a Human Voice\, she argues that human voices go beyond gender and speak for an ethics of integrity\, respect\, and loyalty. The human voice is a voice of resistance\, direct and compassionate\, a requisite for love\, and an advocate for democracy. Gilligan is now Professor of Humanities and Applied Psychology at New York University and a Principal Investigator for the Advancement of Our Common Humanity. She is a widely sought-after speaker\, and we are thrilled that she has come to Los Angeles to have a dialogue with us. \nDr. Susan Hekman\, Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas\, will also share her thoughts about Gilligan’s writings. SUMMARY:Supervision: A Psychoanalytic View
DESCRIPTION:Both the American Psychological and the American Psychiatric Associations have recently advocated specific courses in supervision for their trainees. Good supervision has been described in terms of specific competences or progressive skill sets\, often measured via symptom reduction in the supervisee’s clients. Emphasis has also been put on adapting supervision\, like treatment\, to areas of diversity. But there has been less attention to general developmental goals such as the supervisee’s overall professional and personal growth\, and to areas of maturation that constitute progress in both therapist and patient. This talk contextualizes clinical supervision historically\, exploring some less frequently measured areas of supervisory competence. It aims to be relevant to the practical and professional needs of both supervisors and supervisees.

SUMMARY:Conference - Boys Betrayed\, Men Restored: Consequences of Male Sexual Victimization
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Richard Gartner\, PhD \nResearch suggests that in the United States one in six boys is directly victimized sexually by age 16. It has also become increasingly apparent in recent years that adult men\, like women\, are subject to sexual abuse\, harassment\, and assault.\nIn order to treat this population\, it is crucial that mental health clinicians be aware of the unique challenges male victims face in processing this trauma. This presentation addresses these special challenges. Particular attention will be paid to the themes of male gender socialization\, sexual orientation concerns\, and myths that interfere with men being open about their histories or even recognizing their sexual betrayal. \n

SUMMARY:Evening Presentation - Electra: An Early Case of Childhood Trauma
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jean Goodwin\, MD \nElectra\, like Oedipus\, is a character from Greek mythology. The founders of psychoanalysis used their names to denote a psychosocial developmental phase. However\, Electra’s story\, like the biography of Oedipus\, teaches us more about murderous violence than about internal conflict. Electra can also teach us something about recovery; she and her extremely abused siblings repaired some of their losses and were able to spare the next generation from ongoing transgenerational violence. This discussion reviews the stories told about Electra in the theaters of ancient Athens in search of ideas out how our current patients can contain and process childhood danger and damage.

DESCRIPTION:Addressing the challenges presented by systemic racism\, discrimination\, and othering in our psychoanalytic and community-based organizations is a long-term\, multi-generational endeavor. As part of that effort\, the Council for Leadership and Organizational Studies (CLOS) of the Department of Psychoanalytic Education (DPE)\, American Psychoanalytic Association (APsA)\, in collaboration with the International Psychoanalytical Association (IPA)\, is offering an innovative virtual course to the future international leaders of psychoanalysis: current candidates\, students\, and recent graduates of psychoanalytic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy programs. Enhancing their knowledge and skills in leadership and group dynamics will help them\, their psychoanalytic organizations\, and other community-based organizations in which they participate to more effectively address the challenges of systemic racism and othering. \nThis virtual seminar will explore critical concepts in systems psychodynamics and field theory\, such as intersubjective processes\, group relations\, the social unconscious\, projective identifications\, splitting\,  and social defenses. Thinking of the individual and the group simultaneously\, developing what Bion referred to as binocular vision\, we will deepen our understanding of racism and othering in ourselves and in the groups in which we are embedded. In addition\, we will consider applications of these concepts organizationally to enhance our individual and collective efforts to become more inclusive\, more open in our thinking\, and equitable in sharing power. Each session will be evenly divided between theoretical and experiential components. In the group-as-a-whole we will discuss key points in the assigned readings. Then we will break into pre-assigned small self-study groups to observe and reflect on our own group process as it relates to our learning together about racism and othering. Membership in the small groups will remain constant throughout the course. There is no charge for this course. SUMMARY:In-person Connections and Conversation with Jimmy Fisher Ph.D.: A Psychoanalyst Serves on a Jury
DESCRIPTION:Free meeting with the ICP community in LA open to all.  Most psychoanalysts never serve on a jury. This essay narrates my experience of being juror number 11 for nine days. This criminal trial involved horrific allegations of rape\, sodomy\, kidnapping\, armed robbery\, and brutal beating. The case also involved issues of race and of violence. After attempting unsuccessfully to get dismissed from the jury pool\, I did my civic duty\, following the rule of law and the facts of the case. Simultaneously\, I conducted a thought experiment\, that is\, using psychoanalytic methods to track the various dimensions of participating in this intense and gruesome court case. I tried to be empathic to all members of the trial\, including the perpetrator\, the victim\, the witnesses\, the attorneys\, and the judge. I monitored the affects of the various participants and my own subjective and emotional reactions. I tracked the transference and countertransference. I focused on body language and the verbal cues of all involved. Because I was traumatized by serving on the jury\, writing this paper enabled me to work through some of my own difficulties triggered by jury service. I conclude by suggesting possible ways in which future jurors might be able to manage and reflect upon the secondary trauma of witnessing such heinous crimes\, including the processing of the guilt and shame of making judgments which will have lifelong consequences for the major participants in this story.

While Karyn Kusama grounds The Invitation in expertly rendered characters and a downbeat\, albeit slippery\, realism\, she hews closely to the mechanics of the horror narrative\, utilizing fantastical motifs to meditate deeply on resurrection\, grief\, and the diffusion of the self. In this discussion\, we will continue our celebration of the effectiveness of horror in portraying the profoundly human through the profoundly fantastical. We will work to peeling back the layers of horror to reveal the determinants driving the fantastical\, exploring how The Invitation iterates on themes of death and resurrection.
