SUMMARY:What Then Must We Do? Social Work Ethics in a Time of Moral Injury
DESCRIPTION:Phoebe Cirio\, MSW\, LCSW: In a world where there is a high level of strife and anxiety\, and seemingly endless conflict\, including war\, ethnic violence\, sexism and gender attacks\, open displays of hostility within the United States\, and the rapidly changing climate\, the question arises what should we do? How does one in the mental health profession handle their own responses to these traumatizing events\, and how do we assist those who seek our help? In this course we will look at the usefulness of clinical work\, and specifically psychoanalytic thinking as a vehicle for the containment of strife and anxiety for our patients\, and for ourselves. We will consider the question of an ethical stance within the psychotherapeutic setting for facilitating the patient’s reconciliation with the impact of uncertainty in the world on their mental health. \n  \nCE.

SUMMARY:Connections And Conversation: Going Beneath the Surface: What People Want From Therapy – Linda Michaels\, PsyD\, MBA
DESCRIPTION:Free zoom event with Linda Michaels\, PsyD\, MBA: Our psychotherapy practices do not exist in a vacuum and in these last few years we have witnessed unprecedented upheaval in the areas of politics\, social justice\, the natural world\, and public health. It is vitally important for our practices and communities to be informed about what people are looking for in mental health treatment\, and how they think and feel about the therapies we offer. Therapies of depth\, insight\, and relationship have been missing from\, if not pushed out of\, the public conversation on mental health treatment. After decades of attack from multiple fronts\, these therapies are misunderstood\, undervalued\, and overlooked by the general public. To assess what people know about therapy and mental health and what they really want from treatment\, the Psychotherapy Action Network (PsiAN) conducted extensive original research with the general public. From this innovative and unprecedented effort to “listen” to the public\, we learned about the attitudes and expectations people have towards therapy\, which benefits matter most\, what their misperceptions and biases are\, and what they know and don’t know about mental health and therapy. This presentation will share the findings from PsiAN’s qualitative and quantitative research\, which was conducted both at the cusp of the pandemic and again several years into the pandemic. The presentation will also offer a blueprint for engaging and communicating with the public\, so that the public gains greater awareness\, understanding and appreciation for therapies of depth\, insight\, and relationship.

SUMMARY:Connections And Conversation: An Exploration of Psychosis Through the Schreber Case – Charles Turk
DESCRIPTION:Free zoom event with Charles Turk M.D. By means of a metapsychologic elaboration of certain psychoanalytic concepts “Le388” a psychoanalytic treatment program for psychotic young adults in Quebec City has achieved a 60% cure rate among those engaged in that program. Those cured have been guided to dismantle their delusion and to find satisfying activity in society. I will discuss these concepts with respect to the Schreber case – beginning with his memoirs and going on to the several writers who wrote about him: Freud\, Lacan\, Neiderland and Lothane. Hopefully this will generate a fruitful discussion among us.

SUMMARY:Maintaining Professional Boundaries in Psychotherapy
DESCRIPTION:Bruce Hillowe\, J.D.\, PhD\, is a psychologist-psychoanalyst and mental health care attorney in New York State. In this workshop\, he will be presenting a comprehensive overview of the ethical\, professional\, legal and clinical backgrounds for boundaries; discriminating between boundary crossings and violations; the establishment and maintenance of boundaries at the outset of and during psychotherapy including issues of multiple relationships\, at- risk patients and social media; the challenge of vulnerable patients and therapists; and maintaining clinical creativity and flexibility within the therapeutic frame. The potential harm and legal consequences of boundary violations will also be reviewed. \nPlease note: This 3-hour course has been designed to meet New York State’s mandatory CE requirement for both boundaries and ethics: courses on boundaries that cover New York laws\, rules and regulations related to unprofessional conduct may also be counted toward the ethics requirement. \nCE.

SUMMARY:A Psychoanalytic Playlist with Sasha Frere-Jones
DESCRIPTION:At some point between the heyday of the mixtape and the infinite scroll of the app-based feed\, the music playlist found its place in history\, as a new form of history. With the human touch of curation\, the playlist captures a moment\, selecting some tracks over others\, but breathing with the polymorphous possibility of continuous response. Assembling a live playlist for the audience out of samples of music and psychoanalytic theory\, the kaleidoscopic writer Sasha Frere-Jones (The New Yorker\, Buttondown) will riff on the “frame” of historical change\, refracted through his new memoir\, Earlier (2023)\, and in dialogue with Adam Blum\, co-author (with Peter Goldberg and Michael Levin) of the recent book\, Here I’m Alive: The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis (2023)\, which Frere-Jones reviewed for Parapraxis magazine. Ears up. \nCE.

SUMMARY:Clinical Practice with LGBTQ+ Patients: An Intersubjective/Relational Approach
DESCRIPTION:During this interactive workshop\, Jonathan Lebolt\, PhD\, LCSW-R\, CGP\, will address the following questions: What do we mean by LGBTQ+ (especially the +)? How can we work effectively with patients with a different gender identity or sexual orientation from our own? Drawing on Gray’s intersubjective\, improvisational approach to psychoanalytic treatment\, Dr. Lebolt will also illustrate how the clinician’s use of self can help lead to a sense of agency and growth among patients. \nCE.

SUMMARY:Connections And Conversation: Cupid’s Hour: The Transformative Potential of Female Erotic Countertransference – Janine De Peyer\, LCSW-R
DESCRIPTION:Free zoom event with Janine de Peyer\, LCSW-R: Why has so little been written about the female analyst’s sexual desire? Is sexual arousal during clinical work such a rarity\, or is it a natural response that has simply been relegated to the unmentionable? This workshop will explore cultural and gender prohibitions against the acknowledgement of the female analyst’s erotic arousal within the therapeutic dyad\, whether heterosexual\, same-sex or gender variant. Anchored by a particular case presentation in which an older\, cisgendered\, heterosexual female analyst finds herself unmoored by erotic stirrings toward her younger\, cisgendered\, heterosexual male patient\, de Peyer will explore the emergence of unsettling erotic countertransference\, her attempts to manage this arousal\, and the inherent potential for healing that resides within an intersubjective dynamic of eroticism. By examining the intersubjective collision between her own desire and her patient’s apparent absence of desire\, de Peyer will explore the emergence of dissociative transference-countertransference dynamics\, along with culturally embedded associations to gender\, power\, ageism\, the incest taboo\, and the potential for ethical boundary violation. This workshop will primarily draw on works by Atlas\, Celenza\, Davies\, and Elise.

SUMMARY:"Encountering Representations of Evil" with Donald Moss\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Evil is grounded in an effort to correct the errors of Creation– to define\, categorize and eliminate what it designates as sources of threat and pain. This logic of elimination distinguishes evil from sadism’s logic of excitement. Stressing personal reactions and leaning on the work of Freud\, Primo Levi and Hannah Arendt\, the text takes up pertinent issues raised by Israel/Gaza and by the Institute for Peace and Justice (the “lynching museum”) in Montgomery\, Alabama. \nCE.

SUMMARY:Day 2: Dr. Mark Solms – The Revised Standard Edition and Its Implications with guest Dr. Lois Oppenheim
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute invites you to join us for day two of a two-day (Hybrid) event featuring Dr. Mark Solms & Dr. Lois Oppenheim: The most commonly referenced translations of Freud’s works\, Strachey’s translations\, have been severely criticized over the years. This includes the claim that Freud’s intended meanings have been grossly distorted. Strachey is said to have medicalized psychoanalysis by imposing a spurious scientific consistency on Freud’s sprawling works\, while also concocting an awkward pretentious vocabulary. Along with these poor translations\, there have been 40 unpublished papers by Freud that the learners will have never seen before. This has left gaps in the learner’s understanding of Freud as a humanist that have never before been taught to them or available until now. \nLearners’ will increase their awareness of the challenges Professor Solms faced when translating Freud. Since the practice of psychoanalysis is grounded fundamentally in Freud’s theories\, a better understanding of these theories will have multiple implications for how participants practice psychoanalysis clinically. \nFor more information please visit our events page @ https://chicagoanalysis.org/events \nCE

SUMMARY:Day 1: Dr. Mark Solms – The Revision of Freud’s Theory of the Drives
DESCRIPTION:The Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute invites you to join us for day one of a two-day (Hybrid) event featuring Dr. Mark Solms: Contemporary psychoanalysts have lost confidence in Freudian drive theory but have not replaced it with an alternative drive theory. This is problematic for many reasons\, not least of them being the fact that ‘drive’ was Freud’s connecting link between the body and the mind. Psychoanalysis without drive theory is a disembodied discipline. Most psychoanalysts either have abandoned the use of drive theory or they are still using Freudian drive theory in their clinical work\, because they are unfamiliar with subsequent developments in the field of neurobiology. This presents a gap in the learners ability to effectively use drive theory in their practice. \nAfter attending this presentation\, participants will increase their knowledge of new interpretations of Freudian drive theory\, increase their understanding of the 7 major emotional drives of the human being. They will develop new strategies to use this information in the treatment of their patients. \nFor more information\, please visit our events page @ https://chicagoanalysis.org/events \nCE.

SUMMARY:Traumatophilia: Notes on Libidinal Fugitivity
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Avgi Saketopoulou\, Psy.D. \nPsychoanalytic thinking teaches us that trauma leaves the subject fractured\, less agentic\, more subject to iterative\, stalled revisitations of the traumatic event. With the help of Jean Laplanche’s metapsychology\, Saketopoulou will discuss how significant possibilities for psychic transformation and for contact with experience are courted when we make ourselves passible (Lyotard\, Scarfone) to returning to the site of the trauma. Drawing our attention away from the usual – and somewhat rigid – framework of repetition compulsion\, this presentation foregrounds a different approach: traumatophilia. Traumatophilia concerns itself less with what to do about trauma\, which Saketopoulou describes as traumatophobic\, and rather draws attention to what subjects do with their trauma. Therein we find ourselves in the domain of limit consent\, that psychic territory where we encounter the vexed entanglements between freedom and constraint\, and wherefrom traumatized subjects can make bids to enlarged psychic freedoms. The trauma of slavery and racism’s durational persistence offer premier sites and searing examples for discussing these ideas\, revealing that traumatophobic paradigms generate new\, specifically psychoanalytic forms of racism.

SUMMARY:Here I'm Alive: The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis with Adam Blum\, PsyD\, Peter Goldberg\, PhD\, & Michael Levin\, PsyD
DESCRIPTION:This panel will explore how music comprises the forms of collective living in which the body finds its place in psychical life. The presentations will describe the ways that the vitality of the psychoanalytic clinical process depends at all times on this background quality of shared music\, and how many of the contemporary maladies we encounter in our work reflect the sensory and emotional isolation of those who remain dissociated from this musical weave of human being. The presenters will use selections of music\, draw upon clinical theory\, and provide a link to philosophy\, neuroscience\, and cultural history to frame a discussion of the musical dimension of our psyche-soma-social world.

SUMMARY:Lost Classics (2): Primitive Agony and Symbolization
DESCRIPTION:In the seventh installment of “Lost Classics\,” we will be taking a close look at Rene Roussillon’s “Primitive Agony and Symbolization. ” How are archaic experiences present in the adolescent and adult mind? What role does “interpretation” play in making contact with these primitive parts of ourselves? Does symbolization help? How might we think about symbolizing what has not yet or can’t be symbolized? What role does the body play in the revealing\, discovering or even constructing archaic aspects of self? These are only a few of the important questions in this provocative\, insightful contemporary re-examination on how analytic work helps facilitate change in which archaic aspects of self are intertwined within our adult experience of ourselves and the world. \nCE.
