SUMMARY:Why Can't We Want Anything Anymore? Desire\, Burnout\, Identity\, and the Hidden Costs of Modern Life
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Alison Feit: We are living through a strange cultural moment. People have never had more freedom\, more choices\, more opportunities for self-expression\, or more language for understanding themselves. Yet everywhere we look\, people are reporting some version of the same experience: burnout\, numbness\, indecision\, loneliness\, endless scrolling\, a loss of direction\, a loss of meaning\, a loss of desire. What happened? \nIn this three-part live course\, psychoanalyst Dr. Alison Feit explores one of the defining psychological questions of our time: not simply why we stop wanting\, but why so many of us seem to have lost the capacity to want at all. Drawing on psychoanalysis\, contemporary culture\, philosophy\, literature\, and clinical work\, we will examine the hidden ways desire disappears—not only through disappointment and trauma\, but through success\, adaptation\, identity\, self-improvement\, certainty\, and the pressure to become someone.\nThis is not a course about finding your passion. It is a course about understanding what happened to it.

SUMMARY:6-Week Advanced Leadership Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Format: 6-Week Live Course Hosted over Zoom \nDates: Fridays – October 9\, 16\, 23\, 30; November 6\, 13\, 2026 \nTimes: Fridays – 7:30am – 10:30am PT/10:30am – 1:30pm ET/3:30 pm – 6:30pm GMT \nCredit Amount: 18 credits \nCost: $199 for all guests \nThis 6-week virtual seminar will focus on critical concepts in systems psychodynamics and field theory such as the social unconscious\, projective identification\, splitting\, social defenses\, complex identities\, and intersubjective processes. Widening our conceptual lens so that we can think of individual\, group\, organization\, and the environmental surround as co-creating the field and influencing and shaping each other\, we will use these concepts to deepen our understanding of the unconscious uses and abuses of power across the constructive and destructive spectrum. Each session will be evenly divided between theoretical and experiential components. In the large group\, faculty and members will discuss key points in the assigned readings; break into pre-assigned small self-study groups to reflect on our own group process as it relates to our primary task of learning together about the uses and abuses of power; and return to the large group to continue our self-reflection and organizational self-study. Ultimately\, the primary aim is to enhance our individual and collective efforts\, particularly in the face of hate and human destructiveness\, to become more inclusive as leaders\, more open in our thinking\, and equitable in sharing power. \nLearn more about the 6-week Advanced Leadership Seminar.

SUMMARY:What Teleanalysis Teaches Us About Analysis: Presence\, Absence\, and the Analyst's Internal Frame
DESCRIPTION:Lena Ehrlich\, PsyD has made considerable contributions to our understanding of developing an analytic identity and in the psychoanalyst’s experience of the work we do with patients beyond the narrow concept of countertransference. She has identified our hopes\, enthusiasm and reluctances to extend ourselves to patients. Dr. Ehrlich will now help us think about what was lost and gained before\, during\, and after the COVID pandemic and the increasing use of telephone and video in our work.

SUMMARY:Lee Jaffe Candidates’ Council Paper Prize's Semifinalist Zoom Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Free Association\, Racial Slurs\, and Social Justice: A Psychoanalytic Collision Course\n\nAuthor and Presenter: Emily Frank\, Ed.D.\nDiscussant: Dorothy E. Holmes\, Ph.D.\n\n\nEmily S. Frank\, Ed.D. will elucidate the dilemmas that can arise when a clinician seeks to promote free association and simultaneously attaches pejorative value to racial slurs\, silently deeming some words unspeakable because of a conscious desire to embody social justice values. The judgment of a patient’s words as unspeakable may have innumerable unconscious meanings for the clinician as well as the patient. The author examines potential dynamic meanings of patients’ use of racial slurs in white clinician/white patient dyads and also considers how the clinician’s social justice values can operate as a tension–potentially expansive or constricting–within psychoanalytic treatment. \n\nSaturday\, October 17\, 2026 from 1-3 PM ET. This is a free event open to all members. Register via the Member Portal.\n\n\n\n\n\nEmily S. Frank\, Ed.D. is a psychologist in private practice in Boston and a candidate in the Adult Psychoanalysis Program at the Boston Psychoanalytic Society & Institute (BPSI). Her article\, “Profile: Dorothy Evans Holmes: Psychoanalytic Visionary” has been published online in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and will be in print in an upcoming issue of the journal. \n\n\n\n\nDorothy Evans Holmes\, PhD\, is a Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas and Teaching and Training Analyst Emerita at the same Center. Dr. Holmes is widely published on the psychoanalytic understanding of race\, class\, and gender. Her most recent peer-reviewed article is: Evans Holmes\, D. (2026). Hatred: A Traumatizing Underpinning of Racism. Psychoanalytic Inquiry\, 46(8)\, 828–832. She currently serves in several capacities on the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA): on the Board on Race in Psychoanalysis\, the Advisory Board\, and the Book Review Advisory Board. Formerly\, she has served on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis and JAPA. She is a recipient of the JAPA Prize (2021)\, the Sigourney Award (2022) and the Hans W. Loewald Memorial Award (2025). She was the eponymous chair of the Holmes Commission on Racial Equality in American Psychoanalysis (2020-2024). Dr. Holmes lives and works in Bluffton\, SC.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Donald Winnicott’s 1968 Encounter and the Ongoing Limits of Regional Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:The history of psychoanalysis since Freud has been marked by fragmentation into multiple theoretical schools\, often with limited dialogue across them. M. Nasir Ilahi\, LLM\, LP’s paper examines the deeper reasons for such failures of communication—focusing on schools that originate across transatlantic traditions\, specifically the US and the UK. It proposes that these failures cannot be explained solely in terms of intellectual divergence\, but must also be understood in relation to “internalized psychoanalytic cultures”—the non-conscious cultural value systems that shape the development\, reception\, and practice of analytic theories within a given geographical culture. Focusing on the reception of D.W. Winnicott’s “The Use of an Object” paper at NYPSI in 1968\, Ilahi illustrates how a lack of awareness of differing underlying cultural frameworks and implicit worldviews—especially between British Object Relations theory and American Ego Psychology—obstructed meaningful dialogue despite a shared professional language on the surface. Whereas British approaches emphasize the preverbal mind\, unconscious phantasy\, and early object relations\, American ego psychology privileged adaptation\, verbal processes\, and later developmental stages. These transatlantic confusions continue to the present day\, as will be briefly illustrated by the case of Thomas Ogden\, where despite an explicit affinity at the level of theoretical statements\, clinical work remains firmly—and unknowingly—rooted in North American traditions. These divergences demonstrate that theories in psychoanalysis migrate unevenly across cultural contexts\, often undergoing unconscious transformations. While recognizing the influence of such internalized cultures—rather than assuming universal agreement on psychoanalytic concepts—may create anxieties that our theories are not free of local values (and thus not totally “scientific”)\, it nevertheless offers a way forward for more genuine dialogue across schools and geographies\, helping to differentiate what is regional versus universal in our theories. The paper argues that without acknowledging the cultural and non-conscious foundations of theoretical orientations\, psychoanalysis risks perpetuating confusion\, false consensus\, and seriously missed opportunities for growth and global relevance.

SUMMARY:Resilience and Survival: The Ongoing Journeys of Native Americans
DESCRIPTION:This 8-session seminar\, led by Paul Koehler\, LCSW and Karen Fraley\, LCSW\, will be structured around the careful reading and study of the book\, The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present\, by David Tueuer. This book challenges the notion that Native American culture perished with the massacre at Wounded Knee in 1890. It\, rather\, chronicles the struggles of Native American tribes and individuals as they encountered\, navigated\, and in many ways have overcome the many and varied obstacles they have confronted on their journeys to sustain their ancestral\, pluralistic cultures while at the same time seeking to assimilate into the larger American cultural landscape.

SUMMARY:Bion’s Search for Truth: Getting the Interpretation to the Right Address
DESCRIPTION:NCP is privileged to present a morning with Annie Reiner\, PhD\, PsyD\, LCSW guiding us with a fresh introduction to Wilford Bion’s clinical insights into optimizing an analytical state of mind. \nDr. Reiner will first present an orienting paper entitled\, “Bion’s ‘O’: The Search for Truth in Psychoanalysis. Art\, and Religion\,” examining Bion’s central and most controversial concept of ‘O’ from multiple perspectives. After discussion and a short break\, she will present a second\, clinical\, paper illuminating Bion’s idea of the “selected fact” which aids the clinician to focus intuitive attention on the most relevant factor in the session. Discovery of the selected fact develops clinical precision in making more specific and effective interpretations. Dr. Reiner demonstrates the similarities in the creative states of mind of artists\, scientists\, religious thinkers and psychoanalysts\, using examples of their works and thoughts\, and some of her own poems\, all of which reflect the state of mind that Bion called ‘O’. She shares the experiences and clinical utility of this kind of attention\, paradoxically based on relinquishing control. \nDr. Annie Reiner is a noted author and world-wide communicator of psychoanalytic ideas. She has written extensively about W.R. Bion’s complex ideas in an accessible way that does not compromise its depth. Respected psychoanalyst\, Dr. James Grotstein\, ranked Dr. Reiner “…high among Bion scholars.” \n Annie Reiner PhD\, PsyD\, LCSW is a senior faculty member and training analyst at The Psychoanalytic Center of California (PCC) in Los Angeles\, and a Fellow of the International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA). Her work was greatly influenced by British analyst\, W. R Bion\, with whom she studied in the 1970’s. Dr. Reiner lectures throughout the world\, from the US to South America\, Europe\, Kazakhstan\, Israel and New Zealand\, and is the author of five psychoanalytic books\, including her newest book\, The Poetry\, Art and Science of Psychoanalysis in Bion’s ‘O’ (Routledge\, 2025\,) and her acclaimed book\, W.R. Bion’s Theories of Mind: A Contemporary Introduction (Routledge\, 2023). In addition to her psychoanalytic writing\, Reiner is a poet\, painter\, and fiction writer\, who has written a book of short stories\, four books of poems\, several produced plays\, and six children’s books\, which she also illustrated. She maintains a psychoanalytic practice in Beverly Hills\, California.\nModerator:\nThomas Brod\, MD\, is a member of the NCP Program Committee and Senior Faculty at the New Center for Psychoanalysis.

SUMMARY:The Donald Meyers International Scholar Lecture: Trauma Dynamics\, Super-Ego Pathology and Somatic Narration
DESCRIPTION:Sebastian Leikert\, The Donald Meyers International Scholar Lecture. Somatic narration is a method of working that focuses the shared perception of traces of traumatization inscribed in the body-self. A clinical example will show how the working-through of these bodily traces of trauma changes the pathology of the superego and allows it to overcome the death drive. https://apm.clubexpress.com/content.aspx?page_id=4091&club_id=214333&item_id=3022759

SUMMARY:Cohn Lecture: Tattoos as Artistic Expression and Psychic Phenomena in Psychoanalysis
DESCRIPTION:Through an extended case study of a tattoo artist in psychoanalytic treatment\, this lecture explores tattooing as a legitimate artistic expression. This point of departure shifts the psychoanalytic perspective away from viewing tattoos as a pathological and masochistic external solution to internal unconscious conflicts. What emerges is a dynamic perspective on tattoos\, viewing them as part of patients’ creative fantasies and defenses. This imbues tattoos with the capacity to change over time\, rather than viewing them as permanently inscribed on a statically conceived body and psyche.

SUMMARY:Sleeping with the Enemy: AI\, Grief\, and the Shadow of the Analyst
DESCRIPTION:When Dr. Valerie Frankfeldt lost her analyst in 2024\, she turned to an unexpected companion: ChatGPT. What began as a cursory attempt at coping with grief became a profound reckoning with her own ambivalence about AI\, a journey she has since turned into an unflinching and deeply personal paper. \nDr. Frankfeldt used ChatGPT to help her explore a dream she had about that loss — and discovered surprising depths of insight and self-understanding. The AI even offered some solace during a time when beginning with a new analyst felt unpalatable. Yet the difference between intellectual insight provided by a machine and what is offered by a human-to-human relationship became unquestionably clear. \nFor a “proper” analyst who had always upheld the frame that provides a safe holding environment for treatment\, was using ChatGPT as an adjunct helper “sleeping with the enemy”?

SUMMARY:Film & Mind: Don’t Look Up
DESCRIPTION:“This administration has lost it’s f-ing mind and we are all going to die!” bellows a vein popping Leonardo DiCaprio. Don’t Look Up (2021) captures the dangerous emotional crosscurrents when human nature is confronted with existential terror. Astronomers — Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence)\, his doctoral student — discover a comet on a direct collision course with Earth. They carry their findings to the White House and what follows is not a disaster film\, but a savage psychological and sociological portrait of America’s collective response to existential threat. The public becomes divided – those who can “look up” and those who cannot. \nIn their quest to educate and inform the government and the world\, astronomers Mindy and Dibiasky tango with sex\, power\, denial\, distraction\, and defensive grandiosity. We have the opportunity\, if we can muster our own courage\, to consider the psychodynamics inherent in facing looming catastrophe. \nPlease note: Participants are requested to watch the film before arriving. The session will be structured around guided clinical discussion rather than summary\, with facilitators and invited discussants drawing out the film’s psychoanalytic architecture in dialogue with the group. \nPlease note:\nParticipants are requested to watch the film before arriving. SUMMARY:A Slice of Resistance: A Masterclass for Intensive Psychotherapists
DESCRIPTION:In this masterclass for licensed therapists\, participants will actively review in fine detail a subtitled clinical video with in-depth discussion with Jon Frederickson and Thomas Brod. The video is edited from a single multi-hour consultation in which Jon Frederickson interviews an extraordinarily resistant patient. The case\, called “The Man Who Thought Therapy Was Bullshit\,” demonstrates advanced technique for managing high resistance and omnipotent defenses against characterological depression. Frederickson incorporates clinical insights of Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) into his own psychodynamic technique. This course is built out of detailed discussion with audience-participants of the moment-to-moment choice points by the clinician. This course is limited to licensed professionals. \nJon Frederickson\, MSW is an internationally prominent psychotherapist\, author\, and master instructor specializing in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP). He is best known for his award-winning books on dynamic therapy techniques\, his international teaching\, and his focus on deliberate practice in psychotherapy. He conducts extensive core training and supervision programs globally\, with teaching engagements spanning the U.S.\, Norway\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Poland\, Australia\, and India. He has written over 50 published papers and chapters\, including: \nClinical Thinking in Psychotherapy: What It Is\, How It Works\, and Why and How to Teach It\nHealing Through Relating: A Skill-Building Book for Therapists\nCo-Creating Safety: Healing the Fragile Patient\nThe Lies We Tell Ourselves: How to Face the Truth\, Accept Yourself\, and Create a Better Life \nCo-Creating Change: Effective Dynamic Therapy Techniques (Winner of the 2014 British Medical Association Book Awards\, First Prize in Psychiatry)\nThomas Brod\, MD is senior faculty New Center for Psychoanalysis and former Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. \nHe coordinates the NCP Film & Mind series and the NCP Manifest Mind series. A psychoanalyst in private practice\, his background includes study of ISTDP with Robert Neborsky and Habid Davanloo.
