APsA’s Lee Jaffe Candidates’ Council Paper Prize Presentation

November 4, 2023 @ 1:00pm - 3:00pm EDT

“The Total Training Situation: Dimensions of Candidacy that Potentiate Analytic Process” – 2023 Semi-Finalist Presentation
Presenter: Matt Shatzman, M.A. – A recent graduate of the St. Louis Psychoanalytic Institute
Discussant: Richard Tuch, M.D. – Training and Supervising Analyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis, Chair of the DPE Scholarship and Writing Section.

Matt Shatzman, M.A., the semifinalist for this year’s Lee Jaffe Paper Prize will present his paper, titled “The Total Training Situation: Dimensions of Candidacy that Potentiate Analytic Process” followed by a discussion by Dr. Richard Tuch.

Using material from a training case, the presenter will demonstrate how the candidate experience adds particular dimensions to what Betty Joseph termed the “total (transference) situation” of analytic work. The discussion highlights ways in which a trainee’s experiences outside of the consulting room can catalyze analytic process, analytic identity, and the interactions between them. The presenter and discussant will also elaborate on the challenges of integrating meta psychology with clinical work in the context of the institutional assessment of candidate progression.

Free for all APsA Members.
