Membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association has recently (as of February 2023) expanded and now includes psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, academics, researchers and others - all whose work is profoundly informed by psychoanalytic theory and values.  Policies and procedures are now being developed and changes will be implemented in phases.  During this period of implementation, we thank you for your patience as we prepare for this new and exciting membership expansion.

Psychotherapist Membership 

Graduates of a training program in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at an APsA approved training facility, or those who demonstrate substantially equivalent psychotherapy training and experience are welcomed to become a Psychotherapist Member.

  • Reduced registration fee and advance notification of APsA’s meetings
  • Subscription to APsA's magazine, The American Psychoanalyst
  • Participate in APsA Community Listservs including the Referrals Listserv
  • Special subscription rate to the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA)
  • Inclusion in the Psychotherapist Directory and coming soon, on the online Find a Clinician.
  • Magnify your voice in APsA and participate in APsA elections and committees

In addition, the Committee on Psychotherapists (read mission statement), whose motto is “Bringing the Best of Psychoanalytic Thought to the American Psychotherapist, Classic to Cutting Edge,”  sponsors discussion groups at APsA’s meetings.  These ongoing workshops provide the opportunity to meet with psychoanalytic thinkers in a small group setting that allows ample time for participation and presentation of attendees’ clinical vignettes.

**Are you a psychotherapist-in-training at an APsA Approved Institute/Center? 

  • If YES, then the Psychotherapist -in-Training Member category is for you.  You’ll receive  the same great member benefits but at a reduced dues rate of $65 for 2023.  Membership is available to individuals currently enrolled in a Psychotherapy Training Program at an APsA Approved Institute/Center.  Upon completion of the psychotherapy program, you will become a  Psychotherapist Member.
