Academic Associate Membership

Under Construction

Membership in the American Psychoanalytic Association has recently (as of February 2023) expanded and now includes psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, academics, researchers and others - all whose work is profoundly informed by psychoanalytic theory and values.  Policies and procedures are now being developed and changes will be implemented in phases.  During this period of implementation, we thank you for your patience as we prepare for this new and exciting membership expansion.

Academic Members

Scholars who complete a non-clinical psychoanalytic training program at an APsA approved institute, or those who demonstrate an emphasis on psychoanalysis in their teaching or scholarship, can join the Association to expand and develop their academic and scholarly professions as well as support the principles of psychoanalysis.

Eligibility for Academic Membership

Individuals who have completed non-clinical (academic) psychoanalytic training at an APsA approved institute or training facility, or those who demonstrate an emphasis on psychoanalysis in their teaching or scholarship, are eligible to apply for this category of membership.  Academics and scholars enrolled in non-clinical (academic) training in an APsA approved institute are eligible to join as an Academic-in-Training Member.   To request an application for academic membership or for more information contact membership services.

Benefits of Academic Membership

One of the most important reasons for belonging to the American Psychoanalytic Association is to become part of the voice that advocates for psychoanalysis across the country. APsA membership helps you to:

Participate in the Advancement of Psychoanalysis

  • Advocate for psychoanalytic treatment, education, and scientific inquiry.
  • Support a scientific/humanistic treatment approach that promotes individual freedom and growth.
  • Foster public understanding and study of the human condition

Enhance Your Psychoanalytic Education

  • Academic Members receive a significant discount on registration fees for APsA's biannual meetings.
  • Participate in national scientific meetings, study groups, public dialogues and scientific publications.
  • APsA offers social, scientific, and other networking opportunities - the Association is small enough for all members to be meaningfully involved, yet large enough to provide a diversity of experience and perspectives.
  • Receive preferred subscription rates to the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
  • Get a free subscription to APsA’s magazine, The American Psychoanalyst.
  • Receive timely news and announcements from APsA.

Be Heard

  • Magnify your voice in APsA and participate in APsA elections and committees
  • Lobby and educate Congress about psychoanalysis

Note: Individuals who meet the qualifications for clinical membership in APsA are not eligible to join as an academic member.
