Committee Type: Social Issues Department
Description: The mission of this group is to remain committed to employing psychoanalysis in conjunction with evolving brain and behavioral science to develop strategies for the Association and its members: To support optimal developmental experiences for children, to reduce the precipitants of toxic stress in young children, and to mitigate negative effects on the course of children's development and health. The Committee on Advocacy for Children will advocate for expanded child health and parenting support services. Drawing on a century-long psychoanalytic tradition of child observation, research and observation in child development, and clinical and applied work, psychoanalysts are uniquely positioned to communicate with children and articulate and protect their rights. As in treatment, we proceed with the understanding that children and adolescents have specific developmental needs and capacities and should not be treated by standards and methods that are more appropriate for adults.
