What is a Psychoanalyst Assistance Committee (PAC)?

A PAC is a committee of psychoanalysts charged by the local psychoanalytic institute, society or center to develop, implement and maintain a program to responsibly identify and provide assistance to analysts who may be functioning at an impaired level due to illness.

How does a psychoanalytic organization form and maintain such a committee?

APsaA’s Committee on Psychoanalyst Assistance Committees (CPAC) has been studying this question. There is no template for forming a PAC because each PAC must be suited to each unique analytic organization, yet it is not necessary to re-invent the wheel as you approach this challenge.

Below are links to the protocols of several APsaA member organizations. These protocols represent a range of formal, informal, large organization orientation and small organization orientation. You will note areas of consistency as well as wide variations of form, structure and tone. CPAC and APsaA do not endorse any particular protocol. We offer these selected documents as models from which to derive ideas for your own group anywhere in the worldwide psychoanalytic community.

For questions or PAC-related consultation requests, you may contact the Committee on Psychoanalyst Assistance Committees
