Announcing the Winner of the 2023 Fred Pine Ph.D. Award for a Paper Contributing to Psychoanalytic Theory, Technique, or Development
We are delighted to announce the inaugural recipient of the 2023 Fred Pine Ph.D. Award for a Paper Contributing to Psychoanalytic Theory, Technique, or Development. The winning paper — “Sure it works in Practice but Does it work in Theory? Appreciating Fred Pine,” by Andrew B. Druck, Ph.D., ABPP — reviews the breadth and depth of Dr. Pine’s contributions to psychoanalytic theory and clinical practice, evidencing an incisive and comprehensive understanding of the central tenets advanced through Pine’s publications, presentations, and teaching. Dr Druck then elucidates the truth of these tenets: that human development is influenced by both intrapsychic motivations and real-life experiences; and that there is therapeutic value to integrating and drawing from multiple theoretical frameworks in clinical work.
The Selection Committee — comprised of accomplished psychoanalysts with professional affiliations to APsA, NYPSI, JAPA, Division 39 of the APA, and the NYU Postdoc program — unanimously agreed that Dr. Druck’s paper uses “experience-near language to illuminate the clinical possibilities and nuance that can result when drawing on Dr. Pine’s central focus on the role of development in shaping psychic structure and conflict”. Committee members also noted that, although not a requirement for the receipt of this award, Dr. Druck’s focus on illuminating the value and utility of Pine’s work made this paper a singularly fitting choice as its inaugural recipient.
Andrew B. Druck, Ph.D., ABPP, is a clinical assistant professor of psychology, faculty member, and supervising analyst at the NYU Postdoctoral Program. He is a fellow (training and supervising analyst), former Dean of training, past President, and faculty member at IPTAR, and at the William Alanson White Institute.
The paper will be presented on January 9, 2024 from 8:00-9:30pm at an event to be hosted by NYPSI and co-sponsored by APsA (administrator of the Award) and the NYU Postdoc program. Save the date! Details to follow.
