News: APsaA Applauds Supreme Court Ruling on Same-Sex and Same-Gender Marriage

The American Psychoanalytic Association (APsaA) applauds today’s landmark ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court (Obergefell v. Hodges), recognizing the constitutionality of same-sex and same-gender civil marriage, finally extending all the rights and benefits of marriage to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender couples in all 50 states.

“Marriage has a profound psychological benefit for married individuals and their families,” said Mark Smaller, Ph.D., president of the American Psychoanalytic Association. “That is why in 2012, our organization issued a position statement opposing discrimination in civil marriage to same-sex and same-gender couples. Today, we are celebrating this momentous decision and in awe of all the courageous couples, advocates and leaders who helped get us to this historic day.”

APsaA was also one of the supporters in the amicus brief on this Supreme Court Case, signing on with other leading mental health organization such as the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association and the National Association for Social Workers.
