Submission Guidelines

Scientific Papers

Deadline is May 1 for the National (January) Meeting; December 1 for the Annual (June) Meeting.

Overview

Scientific papers are selected by a juried review process. Papers are presented by the author and considered by a formal discussant with ample time allotted for the audience to respond.

  • Send one blind paper, with all references to the author deleted. The first page of the manuscript must show only the author's name, address, phone number and the title of the paper. The author's name should not appear on any subsequent page.
  • The email subject line should state "Scientific Paper Submission" and for which meeting. Scientific Papers (for oral presentation) must be no longer than 18 pages (double spaced, 250 words per page) and timed for 40 minutes reading time.
  • If a paper is accepted for a Meeting, the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA) has right of first consideration. The paper cannot have been accepted or be under consideration for publication by another journal. JAPA submissions must be done separately. Karl A. Menninger Memorial Award

If you are a candidate or have graduated analytic training within the last seven years and are submitting a Scientific Paper according to the Scientific Program Submission Guidelines above, you will be eligible for the Karl A. Menninger Memorial Award.


Discussion Groups

Deadline is May 1 for the National (January) Meeting; December 1 for the Annual (June) Meeting.

Overview

Discusssion Groups permit a small number of participants to discuss a topic of mutual interest. Discussion Groups meet regularly at the biannual meetings. This continuity offers the opportunity to build collaborations with colleagues nationally and internationally. New participants are welcome to each group. Decisions concerning new discussion groups are made uon how subject matter relates to what is already taken up in existing groups, and on space availability.

Symposia

Deadline is May 1 for the National (January) Meeting; December 1 for the Annual (June) Meeting.

Overview

Symposia explore the interface between psychoanalysis, society and related disciplines. Many attempt to demonstrate how psychoanalytic thinking can be applied to non-psychoanalytic settings. These sessions feature a talking points format with 10 to 15 minutes per presentation and a minimum of 15 minutes for audience participation. No papers are read and the emphasis is on audience interaction.

Submission Guidelines

Submit a brief (not more than two pages) proposal under the following headings:

  • Rationale
  • Program format
  • Suggested speakers

Panels

Deadline is October 1 for the National (January) Meeting; March 1 for the Annual (June) Meeting.

Overview

Panels bring together nationally recognized psychoanalysts to present papers on clinical and theoretical topics. Active interchange with the panelists is encouraged in response to questions from the audience. Please note the lead time following the submission of panel proposals. All panel proposals are circulated and voted upon one year in advance by the Program Committee members. For example, a proposal that has been submitted for a National (January) Meeting is received in October. It is voted on in January and, if accepted, the panel is held the following January. When the committee meets, the eight proposals that have received the greatest number of votes are discussed, and from among these a selection is made.

Submission Guidelines

Panel proposals (two pages maximum) must be submitted with the following headings:

  • Name of panel
  • Submitted by
  • Description
  • Objective
  • Suggested participants (chair, panelists, discussant if there is to be one). Please note final decisions as to participants will be made in consultation with the program committee.
  • Suggested format. Please note final decisions as to format will be made in  consultation with the program committee. Possible formats include:
    • Three 15 to 20  minute presentations with or without a discussant
    • Three 5 minute presentations of each panelists point of view on a topic, followed by three 10 minute clinical presentations illustrating their points of view
    • Three questions posed by the chair followed by spontaneous 5-7 minute answers to each question by each panelist
    • A 20 to 30 minute clinical presentation, which is then discussed by two or three panelists
    • Combinations of the above

Gertrude And Ernst Memorial Ticho Lecture

Deadline for Nominations:
May 1 for the 100th Annual (June 2011 - San Francisco) Meeting

Overview

The Gertrude and Ernst Ticho Memorial Lecture, part of the Scientific Program of APsaA's annual meeting, is given by an early to mid-career analyst who is making contributions to psychoanalysis and shows promise of making significant future contributions to psychoanalytic science, practice, and thought. The lecture was inaugurated in June 2006 with the generous support of the Gertrude and Ernst Ticho Charitable Foundation to further the Tichos' devotion to developing younger analysts.

The lecture carries a stipend, covers expenses, and will be publicized. In addition, there will be a reception in the lecturer's honor. To be the Ticho Lecturer is a signal honor.

APsaA is in the beginning planning stages for the Ticho lecture that will be given during APsaA's annual meeting in June 2011 in San Francisco.

The APsaA Program Committee is seeking nominations for the Ticho lecturer.

Submission Guidelines

Letter of Nominations should be emailed to the Scientific Programs and Meetings Director.

In your letter, please explain why you feel the individual you nominate should be considered and include the individual's Curriculum Vitae. The nominator should know the nominee's work very well and be prepared to speak to the nominee's accomplishments to date as well as the nominee's future intentions regarding psychoanalytic practice, science, and scholarship and capacity to implement them. Effective nominating letters are detailed, specific, and generally are no more than three pages in length. The nominator should also include discussion of the nominee's position as early or mid-career. The nominator should also give consideration to the nominee's capacity to craft and deliver an engaging lecture.
