Who is eligible for the Fellowship Program?

Psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and academics who meet the specific eligibility requirements as outlined below.

Applicants may be nominated by their Department Chairs or Program Directors if applicable. When not applicable, self nominations are encouraged. Applicants must be training or working in the United States during the fellowship year.

PSYCHOANALYTIC CANDIDATES are not eligible for the Fellowship because of their ready access to mentors and to scientific activities at local and national levels.

All Applicants should: 

  • have demonstrated leadership ability in their discipline,  or 
  • have special aptitude in research, teaching, and/or clinical endeavors, 
  • have special interest in psychodynamics, psychoanalysis, or applied psychoanalysis.

Applicants need not be planning to become psychoanalysts.  

What are the specific eligiblity requirements?

PSYCHIATRY APPLICANTS must at the time of application be full-time general or child psychiatry residents, PGY-2 or higher, or fellows or psychiatrists who have become board eligible within the previous three years.They will hold at least half-time academic appointments that include training, leadership, or research responsibilities during the Fellowship year. 

PSYCHOLOGY APPLICANTS must at the time of the Fellowship hold at minimum a half-time position with an academic department or clinical training program, and have training, leadership, or research responsibilities; Applicants, if predoctorate, must have completed required coursework and be in or beyond the predoctoral internship; or, if postdoctorate, have received the doctoral degree within the past five years.

SOCIAL WORK APPLICANTS must at the time of the Fellowship have an M.S.W., D.S.W. or Ph.D. received within the past five years. Applicants must demonstrate a pursuit of applied psychoanalysis in one or more of the following areas: at minimum, a part-time appointment with an academic department; a position in training, leadership, public policy, or research; or in an interdisciplinary position (at least part-time) offering an opportunity to teach through didactics or consultation. D.S.W. and Ph.D. applicants must have begun their advanced degrees within five years of the M.S.W.

ACADEMIC APPLICANTS must be individuals from academia or non-mental health professions; e.g., the humanities and social sciences, medicine, law, theology and the arts. They should demonstrate a serious ongoing interest in psychoanalysis and its relationship to their primary field. They should be curious about how psychoanalytic theory is used clinically. Applicants must currently work in a position that influences others through education, writing, public speaking, research and/or organizational leadership. They should be no more than eight years postdoctorate (or its equivalent) or, if predoctorate, be nearing completion of degree.
